Have a few free hours so headed to the flood way channel. Never been or fished it but it was soon apparent that the north shore was the way to go. Not much in the way of room but i fished away (God what a lot of garbage down there) Once my neighbours left due to their hooking many fish on minnows but not landing many (and the bugs) I was able to move into a better casting postion. (and a better spot that didn't have every retrieve ending in a snag) Got lots of hits, lots of goldeye, a few sauger a real nice Drum that my photo editor ate (booooo) and this thing notice the skeeter in the picture BTW i was using the new OFF botanical and it does not melt your flyline and it does keep the bugs from biting (but for about 45 minutes)

Well I didn't stop to measure him mostly due to the skeeters (speaking of an itch) but also there was this German family pressuring me to give it to them (they already had a tupper bin full)
But guesstimating that the fish is from my reel seat to the just past the first guide it will be between 30"-33" in length (but was quite heavy)

Good one Rob, I'm gettin ready for next weekend. I start my 2 week holiday. That'll be nice. My parents and I are heading up to Lake of the prairies for one whole week. Man the possibilities are endless. I've never fished for carp but I've got the 9 weight rod/Reel out and my Type 1 line and I'm already to go. I can't wait. Do you have any suggestions on what lakes I should focus on the most. We'll be at pyats point close to spear so that'll be good and goose is close but what else is there to try? Ryan

Went for my first official fly fishing trip to the exact location you speak of tonight at about 8p.m.
Met two great guys (fly fisherman) whom I was able to watch and learn from. They were putting on quite a show with the goldeye and the odd carp thrown in for good measure. One of the guys landed 2 in the 30" range in the short time I was there.
Managed to catch 3 goldeye on my own and had a fight with what might have been a carp for 10 minutes before I lost it.
Was quite an experience seeing the fly guys out fish the convential fisherman around us.....always wondered if Stu was giving me the straight goods on catching so many fish with the fly rod.....now I'm a believer.
As mentioned in some other posts....I can not believe how much garbage is left laying around the shore line!

The garbage will always be there. One has to remember where most of the people came from when fishing Lockport and the way they were brought up. To them it is a way of life to live in filth. It is really unfortunate when they move here and continue the same life style. Anyway Robert nice Carp. About time you started to fish for big fish. What a riot. For anyone that wants to catch big fish and lots of 'em Lockport is the place to go. Still waiting for the first report of 150 fish night. Don't worry its coming. Which one of you guys will be the first.

can you elaborate on what worked for goldeye, pattern, technique? The pattern is a #2 or smaller streamer (you can find it on the main web site as "Simple Streamer" I was using an 8wt with a sink/ghost tip (the ghost tip is for clear water carping so makes no difference at the Red. Cast out and crawl the fy along the river close to the bottom (if ya ain't hanging up ya ain't doing it right) as the sunset and a hatch of small 4 winged white (or very light) mayflies the gold eye seemed to like a faster retrieve (flie higher up in the water column) and I think floating line with unweighted nymphs would have worked better. I am hoping to get down again this thursday

He who plucks the bass came home last night to a frantic message from Sir Carp . So I call and hear the news , make plans to hook up the following night and the touble begins . This is all going around and around in me head , finally I can't take it any more and the next thing I know I'm out at the floodway . Strange how these thing's happen . Well I give my 9 wght a try with the only line I got on it right now a # IV sink , nothing happening so I change up to my 7 wght and strat getting hits . so I finally managed to bring in a small Carp around 15 lbs on my 7 wght. night's coming on and all the bait people are leaving so I move over to the spot Will and I were working on sunday , go back to my 9 wght and start crawling the line slowly along the bottom with hand twists and star having lots of hits , managed too bring in a couple , some were snagged but the last one was fair hooked and was at least 33 if not bigger . Called it a night , headed home and can't wait to do it again tonight ......Kim

I couldn't take it any longer so I cashed in an extra-curricular recognition day and spent the morning on the north side of the floodway...
Wasted the first half hour casting at porpoising carp out towards the middle, then I noticed all the tails in the slack water only a few feet out from shore - EUREKA!
Had pretty solid action by bumping a white Clouser along the bottom. My landing percentage was pretty dismal though. I only managed to bring in two - both were slightly under 30 inches. I have never had so many fish come "unbuttoned" on me! Anybody have any ideas on this? I think a lot of the fish that shook off were probably foul hooked but I bet I only landed 10% of what I hooked.
Also caught a nice drum and a suicidal goldeye by poking my fly into pockets in the flooded willows along the river just downstream of where the floodway pours in.
All in all, a great morning. Heck, I actually had my backing into the guides on 3 occasions. Thanks to everybody for the inspiring reports that got me out there...

Was out last night with the " quiet" crew - jees you guys are quiet when you hook a fish- how come no- one else screams and yells at them:)))))))) Stubbornly stuck to an Easter Crawdad in a size 1/0 in the hopes of a big one:))) I think I landed three or four but they were fin hooked. So smaller patterns size- 6 or 8 seem to be better. Thanks guys that was fun )

Okay - Sir Carp - ya got me bugged too. Carpaholics are-us-are-us Although I didn't land one - the few hook-ups got the rush going. Great evening - 6 crazy rods - 3 of them alone outfishing the bait people man were they ticked - couldn't understand them - but the frowns and tone .... oh they had tone alright And by the time I left - RB even landed a kittie.
Kim - you got a good notion on your Thursday idea. I'm in.
oh - and hte quiet thing - I was too busy trying to watch the pro's ;D

hey where's my picture! Hoping to see my first cat of the year
Too much fun and the cool temps (while keeping the majority of the white bucket brigade away) didn't hurt the fishing one little bit.
1 cat 3 carp landed (1 fair hooked) and uncountable numbers of hook ups
as Arney says "I'll be back"

Are you guys casting from shore or wading? Is it muddy? I thought the cold front might slow things down. Wrong. I should have been there.
Later,

Dan - we were off shore .... Waders were in order and you could go in a couple feet. waders - yes - they WERE in the vanIts rocky there for the most part - but some dirt was showing through. As always - would have to watch footing. RB - might take a while for the pic - I tought it was an older-almost filled up film. But its a new film Guess we'll have ta go fill it up ;D ;D as soon as its full - it'll be developed. . . . and it goes on, and on, and on, and on and ........ they just wouldn't stop carp-ing about it

Went to lockport tonight (northside spillway). Fished from 7-8:30. Lots of fish - bait guys were slaughtering - they all keep everything. Just as well the hooks look very deep.
Anyway I started out fairly far away from floodway gates - nothing doing. Then at 8 moved about 30 yards from the gates. Getting eaten alive but determined to catch something - man there are so many fish surfacing. Then wham - the moment of truth - nice carp fairly hooked on my #2 easter egg clouser. Good news landed him, got a picture (not digital), and released him. Bad news - he broke my 8 weight. What a fight - about 6 good runs - 4 of them rod intact, the last two not pretty. It was cool though - despite the rod. What power those fish have, and only a 25" yet.
Thanks for the tips guys - any advice on what to do with a carpsized 2-piece rod. It's the tip section that's broken.

Well ya can order a new tip section or (like I am thinking) use it as an excuse to buy a 10' 9wt ;D Good stuff but ya those pickeral rigs are murder on fish. Guess there ain't much point to the C&R thing there.

Went back Saturday night - new rod - and didn't do well. One small sauger. Maybe one other fish - didn't strike quick enough and he spit the hook.
Was having trouble staying out of the rocks etc. Used an intermediate sink and then floating as well. The depth changes so much I found it hard to avoid snags with a hand twist retrieve. Are you guys using unweighted flies? Maybe I should leave the bead chain eyes at home. Rod tip low to the water or high?
Any other pointers would be much appreciated. Lost four flies to the rocks, and didn't catch carp, cat, or drum. I keep wondering if the fishing is hot/cold or if I'm doing something wrong and that is why my numbers lag most of the reports on the board.
Cheers,
Dan

I was using the IS line too but i quickly found the need for weight mote but I also found where I stood made a HUGE difference in the numder of snags. When I am able to move right or left the # of snags can really change (and it aint all rocks ..lots or 25lb fire line down there from when the bait guys get snagged and just cut their line ) They way I look at fishing down there is that it can be hot and cold but once the sun starts to set the white pail brigade leave the bugs come out and the fishing gets hot..(hint ...sometimes it is best to show up at 7 or 8 and get all the good fishing & elbow room in the next 3-4 hours) And on a philosophical note............. don't worry about the numbers of fish (hint.....the secret to catching lots of fish is to go fishing a lot)

Sounds like you had fun Dan:))))))))))))))))
my own retrieve is a very slow lift/twitch and drop approach( Lockport) with most fishing hitting the the drop part- but I think you really need to style the presentation to the pattern fished- mine have been crawdad unweighted - its my own take - so take that as its given- but slow very slow pattern appropriatte presentations and small patterns( 6/8 at the biggest better 10/12)) -I tried scaled up versions up to 1/0 last trip and had NO fair hooked fish-seems to make a big difference in all the scenarios i,ve encountered success with carp so far. By far the consensus amongst the serious carp on the fly guys is the A- list patterns are rubber legged Hares Ear/small crawdad/dragonfly nymph. Part of the problem at Lockport is that it is not a typical situation or ongoing situation( the floodway will dissapear soon) so tactics have to be very situation specific. hope that helps.

Tons of fun. I can definitely understand why you have been chasing the wily carp with earnest.
I think I might have been using too big of a streamer (#2 hook).
Thanks for the suggestions.
