John: You mentioned you canoed the river but is there access to the fishable points where one could walk/hike then wade or is it on private land. Can one walk/wade up and down the river??

You can get to it just north of Dominion City. There's a bridge across it there and a pretty productive spot - an broken old control dam?

There are numerous access points east of Dominion City. I like to work my way down stream from hwy 59 Bridge. There are several roads that run up to the river on both the Roseau Rapids North and Roseau Rapids South Road. These roads follow the river on both the north side and south side of the River. once on the river the shore line is quite condusive to hiking up and down stream even in high water conditions. You may have to do some bushwacking to get to pools in river bends but its not to hard.

Ty for the info John- we had chatted about maybe a bug hunting/id trip there- you have any info on when hatches come off there?

It's been a while since I read John Flanagan's work that I gave you but I beleive there are dates and months listed on when the hatches occured. There is more current information on the Mayfly studies at the Freshwater Institute over at the U of M. They have a website and contact numbers. Also Terry Galloway over at the U's Entomonlogy Department may be able to connect you with some people that have been doing more recent studies. The Entomology departments are always doing research on some bug or other the insects of the World are are very much used as the litmus paper for the enviroment. The hatches on the Roseau are starting as we speak. The winter stone flies do their thing long before the ice disapears and the run of starts. Their reproductive cycles happen in the air pockets under the ice and no one even realizes it's happening. The first thing to emerge and the last thing emerge in this region is of course the Midges so they probably are the most important pater in you fly box.The Mayflies don't start to apear until the end of May and get more abundent as the spring and summer advance. June and July are probably the best hatch months. Most people think that temperature is the thing that sets them of but it is actually the lengthening of the day light hours that is the major trigger. I would put my money on the fathers day weekend as the best time to go on an entomology excursion.

John,
Sorry I missed the invite for an impromptu chat - if there's the possibility of you letting a few "gems" about the Roseau slide, I'm all ears...
I believe that I left the board but failed to properly logout, so it showed me as being here.
Anyway, I appreciate the access info about the Roseau. What can you expect to catch in that stretch? Is it a seasonal thing or does it last all summer long?

Ty- for the contacts info John- I'll check those out- the Flanagan list- seems to focus on regional distribution and has no hatch time info . Curious which reference you use for ID ?-

The Roseau being the main tributary of the Red holds all the same species. The key to locating them is the water flow in the river. It is acutually easier to fish when the water levels are low because it consentrates the fish in the pools. In spring the main river is usually to high to fish but then you consentrate on the tributaries that back up with water and can hold some very large Walleye and Pike. During the summer months when the water tends to be low the Dominion City Dam is a good place to fish. It becomes a mini Lockport situation as the fish from the Red can't get past the dam.The goldeye fishing can be quite good in the lower stretches at this time also. There are also some Oxbows east of Dominion that can have fish trapped in them when the water leveles lower and they can become seceret honey holes when you find them. Ooops i think I let one slide there.

Roseau is still in what is considered a flood stage. Most of the old oxbows are full of water and some property on the rivers edge is getting flooded. I was out on the River this weekend but didn't get a Fly wet. The river is supposed to crest on May 29 so lots of water to come yet. It should be settled down by Fathers day and with the high water there should be some good fishing in June. A lot of fish will have moved out of the Red during the high water and into the Roseau.

Here is the angry little turtle. Sorry about the focus, it was one of the disposable camera's in a waterproof case, and in this case it didn't do a good job at capturing the image. You can see the line and fly along the right side of its neck. He was really pi$$ed at me! To answer cane's question, it was Stu's Easter wooly. Not that it matters, however, as it was fowl hooked.

Hey where's everyone going for the long weekend. I'm hoping to check on the hatches on the Roseau this weekend. Have a cable bridge to finish across the river this weekend and should get a good look at the hatches. Will try to fish in the evenings or early morning and see where the fish have gathered as the river levels are receding. I should come home with another full can of photos so I'll post afew more. ;D
