I have always maintained that when a person ties flies silhouette is the most important item. Second comes color. Not a solid color but blended colors to make the color you require. These two ideas have helped me take a lot of fish.

I probabley fall in the material movement/blended colour and contrast( hard edged and soft edged materials included)/proportion in equal amounts of consideration camp. I guess i,ve always had more luck with patterns that are suggestive rather than representative. Though I must admit I rarely invent/create flies just use established patterns, but choose the paterns I tie/fish based on the above criteria.
