I was looking at Cane's fly pictures and some of those soft hackle style patterns got me thinking. Cane, I notice that you palmer a hackle up the hook shank on a number of them. The palmered hackle lays fairly flat against the hook shank - swept backwards. Whenever I palmer a hackle along the hook shank, it always winds up standing up at right angles to the shank and even sweeping forward a bit. How do I get the hackle to be swept backwards? I'm sure there are a few people who can help me here - any tips are welcome.

Hi Dale- my own approach to palmering is as follows- I always tie in a rib material( fine wire or 2/3lb mono before forming the body- once the body is on I take my palmering hackle and tie it in at the EYE end with the shiny /more defined coloured side facing the hookeye and with the hackle at right angles to the hook shank - wrap/palmer the hackle in open turns down the shank of the hook to the end of the body. Take the rib material and secure the palmered hackle at the end of the body with two turns of the rib material made in the opposite direction to that used when you wrapped the palmered hackle- then in open turns( i always try and hit the top dead center of the palmered hackle/hook shank with the rib) wrap the rib material up to in front of the palmered hackle and tie off - hope that helps/makes sense:)

Thanks, Cane! Makes perfect sense... I'm definitely going to try it.

Cane, just curious, do you tie your hackle in by the tip or the butt end? I don't do my hackle the way you described, but I want to give it a go. -Yaf

I tie in the butt end- that way it keeps the hackle length tapered to the barb end of the fly- i think tip end tied in at the barb end does the same if you palmer that way.
