Keep kids out of trouble... Get kids away from the tube/video games... Get kids off the couch... Spend time with your kids... Create memories... Whatever reason/motive you have - mine is all the above - and more. In other posts - I noted that my son has designed one and has also started tying. Here's what he's done: Until we find a similar fly tied by someone else - we call this one Fred's Fly I told him what the materials were for & he did the rest. Here's his first fully tied (ok - I tied it on and off) he did all the rest. And he went on to a second He's hooked (pun intended) on Fly Fishing. Our daughter is tying too - just started Tuesday. Now with the 3 of us tying - shouldn't run out of flies. I just have to find a couple 5wt. outfits for the kids . . . good reason to give my starter rod to one of them and get a new one for ....... me ;D

Family outings, family relationships are top on my priority list. Fishing is something that .. can be a family thing. I have a few great memories of fishing when I was younger - and I'd like our kids to have the same.
Both our kids are artistic - our son more-so - and creating and tying flies just fits into that niche. The brown that tagged our sons fly at Reynolds pushed him over the top I believe. And when I was FFing & catching at Lyons and the daughter wasn't - regardless how many times we switched places - pushed our daughter.
Quite often we do day drives (some quite extensive) - always there is water associated with the destination. I fly fish, kids dunk/spin or play, wife reads a book. We do minor explorations for new areas, run from bears, watch wildlife. We take lunch/supper along and have a picnic. Its a family affair. Obviously the kids have taken rather well to fishing, and that makes it more enjoyable. These will be the old memories that the kids will have, enjoy, and talk about later in life.
As for getting the wife going . . . well, lets just say, our youngest son will be fly fishing before her.
