I guess you could say I'm moving on to other spieces for fly fishing (previously stayed with trout). Dilemma - what flies to use ... I've spent hours searching the web for topics on fly fishing for pike, carp, bass, whitefish, etc.,.,.,.,.,.,. Can't come up with much. I've had some limited success with poppers, and some what you would think would-be trout flies (#16 midges) on bass. But what-about for the rest I'm sure, as a kid in a candy store, there is more out there. I have a 5/6 rod and a 7/8 rod. The 5/6 I have set up with a 6wt. WF floating line and the 7/8 I have set up with a 8wt. WF floating line. Any info Pics would be great - not familiar with names yet (until I've used them a time or 2). On trout - I've tried the favorites and failing that - usually either matched the hatch, or matched the aquatic life. Does that hold up on these critters as well - or is there a different tactic ? Also - where to pick some up - I'm not into tying (yet). thanks,

Hey Darrell: Glad you made it over. I'm hoping everyone coverts and i can close down the old (4 months) girl that i started. I cut my teeth fly fishing for small mouth bass in rivers in Ontario. Here it is mostly lakes but i'll bet you already have what they like. Streamers and deer hair poppers are the starting point for bass but i have caught them on drys and nymphs. For pike BIG is the way but like bass it is streamers and deer hair poppers. Saturday night at the locks the carp were rising to white flys but not mine but carp and white fish are two that i have NEVER caught on a fly. You should be tying but get into it slow if you want during the winter you can come over to my place and i can show you how. But the only place in town to get flies is The Fishin' Hole. You can get them online from Northern Angler (Duaphin MB) or any place.

Darrell,
A couple natural-coloured Zonkers, a couple of black Woolly Buggers, and a couple of chartreuse Clousers - in size 2 or 4 - plus your poppers would be a good start for bass and pike. (Careful when your casting the Clousers, they have weighted eyes, and can take a bit of getting used to.)
A good reference for learning the names of patterns is a Cabela's flyfishing catalogue. They're free and the number is 1-800-237-4444. (Don't buy the flies; they're pretty pricey after the exchange and the shipping.)
Another possibility for buying flies is the mail order division of the Fishing Hole - you don't pay any PST, you get a coupon for your next order that's worth what you pay in shipping (usually around 7 bucks), and their selection is probably a better than the local store.
One more mail-order place to check out is Russell's Sporting Goods in Calgary (www.russellsports.com).
I'm probably gonna get skewered for my blatant failure to support local business, so I better get going...
Dale
P.S. Almost forgot about the carp... I've got a few carp (three to be exact) - all of them on regular trout flies. Two were on nymphs and one was on a grasshopper.

thanks guys
As for supporting local business - if they had the stuff we need - at a decent $$$ - we'd go there.
passed through Can-Tire unicity thurs pm for sons b-day bike. Anyhoo - they've got another big clearance bin of flies. Wife was with me - so I was only able to browse for 10 seconds (literally). Came out with some wolly-worms and a glow-bug. Avg cost of these clearance flies ~$1.20 ea.
The book I got recently from my darling (Fly Fishing Canada from Coast to Coast to Coast) has what seems to be a good general section for flies - color piks and names. I'm getting better - fly and learn.
again - thanks. Soon - once temps drop a tad, we'll have to get together.
darrell,

Try contacting Curtis or go down to United Army. They took all my wholesale company's inventory of flies in the spring. Got out of the fly part of things due to personal uncertanties here. They got a wide selection of flies, so maybe worth checking out.
A great way to kill the winter doldrums, talk fishing and even to learn to tie flies, you should get to a meeting or two of the Manitoba Fly fishers Assoc. If you like what it has to offer it is a great investment starting out in the FF sport.

WW great heads up on the in town fly deals..you are full of suprises I have met many of MFFA (not to be confused with MBFF which is this site) stream and lake side everyone is a good guy. The Tuesday night meetings at Kildonan High School conflicts with my music playing/teaching schedule (as do their outtings) but i agree that anyone who is interested in ffing should join up and/or go to their meetings. They do great work for fishing in general and can use all our support. And you'll have some fun i suspect...

Hey Darrell: You need some flies? Why don't you come down to the fishin hole and see me. My every day price on flies is $ 1.25. I stock patterns that catch fish anywhere in north america. If there is any thing special you want I will order it in for you. As to the prices we charge I can assure you that they are very competitive. I am not afraid to recommend different suppliers if I cannot get you product. AS for the other guys out there just think if you supported the store more can you imagine what I would be able to bring in. anything you want. Don't get me wrong the support from you customers is really appreciated but if we band together the fly fishing section at the hole could be twice the size. Wouldn't that be a hoot ! Any questions please call. All the best. Stu

Good point! If there is a way those of us in the WPG local area could support the fly dept at the fishin hole that would translate into more stuff for us to look at and buy. Questions. 1. is there a way of say getting a discount for posters here. I maen they would have to give more info about themselves then most do and it might have to be in the form of an emailed card (i think MFFA mambers get a % off already yes no) 2. Any chance of getting TFO rods in the store?? I have heard great things about them but i am not one for buying much without having it in my hands. 3. to that is there an area or policy at the store in regard to casting a rod before buying. Not much of a case for the spin bait crew or even newbie FFrs but those with some experience would be interested. rb

thanks Stu - I've been down to the Hole a couple times lately (even dragged the wife along). ;D As I'm new to tying, I can't much comment on what the Hole stocks - but - huge kudos - you do carry FF stock - and that's a major bonus. CT, SIR, and some other stores carry limited, but untrustworthy stock - so.... a dedicated store gets more of my business. Now if you could just do something about being in Transcona As for buying flies - great ! Wife pointed them out last time we were there. Until I tie what I need, it looks like you have what I may be needing. We're heading west next year (family gathering) and . . . . PA Nat'l Park has some great spots (walleye, pike, lakers, bass). I'll be in touch later on that. Anyhow, gott run. Again, thanks. darrell,
