I want to do a post for some of our Manitoba Fly Fisherman that might be planning to vacation in Florida during the winter months.
The Fishing in Florida is amazing and provides you with a multitude of fish both invasive and common.
One of my favourite fish to target are the big Grass Carps that have been introduced to the Miami area to keep the weeds down in the canals.
They are only catch and release and need a little work and knowledge to be successful.
Again most of my knowledge came from my Buddy John Machin and Steve Lancaptain Kantner’s Books.
In Florida they have big Ficus trees along Griffin rd. All the way to shotgun rd. Don’t forget to check out the canal on shotgun rd. in Fortlauderdale. These trees produce a small red berry in the spring and fall.
They are easily spotted along the sidewalk when they ripen and fall on the sidewalk and in the canal.
Thats the best time to look for rising carps eating berries.
Grass carp are skidish and will scare away if they see you..so the best approach in hiding behind the big tree or laying low before you start casting your berry.
You can cast under the tree or down current bellow the tree. Like I said Grass carp are skiddish and will refuse your berry with a big tail splash. If they see your line they are gone.
A longer leader is better and use invisible line.
The berry I make are from small foam indicator balls I purchase at BassPro.
I make a small groove to glue a small hook...make lots!
Then I paint them with ruby nail polish and and use a mat finish on a 24 inch tippet.
Hope this help, any question just ask.
Woild be nice to see some Manitoba Boys in Florida!
