I bought 2 Indian capes off eBay and they came in yesterday. Today I took them out of the bag and they have a smell and feel greasy. I was thinking of shaking them in a bag of borax to help dry them out some more and hopefully get rid of the smell. Has anyone ever had this before? Looking for ideas on how to treat them.

Yuck. Sounds like the capes weren't prepared properly and may be rotting. You have nothing to lose by applying borax to the cape. However I would only work the borax into the skin side....don't do the shake thing in the bag.....you don't need to do the feather side. Also check the skin side to see if any excess tissue was left and if so remove this with a razor blade or sharp knife. If they were in the same bag I hope they were skin to skin...not skin to feather. Wear gloves when you work the borax in and leave the capes for several days to air dry (don't put them in bags) then shake the borax off and check the skin. Don't skimp on the borax. Hope this helps and things turn out.

I will get some borax today and do as you suggest and let you know how it turns out. This why I don’t like buying stuff like this online, I like to see things in my hand before I buy.
