This particular variation came to me while I was fishing bass ponds in Florida. I wanted something that would sink a little faster but not so fast it would snag bottom. It's a tiny fly with a tiny bead so it won't sink like a stone. To sort of answer you question, I have not tried this variation but have added beads to flymphs and it has done great.

Like this Robert. With Gulff uv resin you can change the colour of the bead to whatever you want. Makes for lots of options.

I love it. A bit of weight on a nymph is a much classier approach than the split shot I had been trying to get it down. I can see this catching whitefish on lake of the woods this summer.
