As I wait for my new Danvise Jaws I do some prep work the shafts are made for old treble classical strings.

This is neat .... what size beads and what size mono are you using.
Dean
I just reread the original and noticed you mentioned using old string from an instrument, nice .

the beads I use are craft an dollar store bulk. They come in 2 sizes and not being for fly fishing are dirt cheap. Not created equal I do toss some for being wonk. 20lb mono is ok but not as thick as a classical guitar string particularly the B and G strings. Mono for fishing tends to be more supple as well.

How do you melt the ends of the strings?

Lighter, candle, match. It doesn't take much, try not to burn/ignite it..caution it's hot if touched.i generally wet fingers if needed to slide the burnt end into the eye..small forceps ,hackle pliersto hold the mono.

I use tweezers on the mono, with one bead o,n melt the end till it balls up,snap my wrist to 'seat' the eye, put another bead on the other side and repeat. you could use a glass of water to cool them off after (the mono/string takes a surprisingly long time to cool) but I just put them on the lid as shown carefully.

I love the look of glass bead eyes and find they don't sink anywhere near like brass or lead eyes. That gives lots of opportunity to fine tune the fly by adding more or less weight as desired.
About time to gear up for the upcoming melt!

I order my beads from www.fushionbeads.com They have lots of variety in their seed beads and shipping to Canada is quite reasonable. Last order, they sent me a few samples of Swarovksi shimmer 2 beads .. a bit expensive but they look amazing.
