Hi everyone, As I am new to the forums and also being new to fly fishing I guess it was only fitting that I should want to try my hand at fly tying. As I am a hunter and a trapper I now suddenly look at every tuft of hair and patch of feathers in a completely different way, especially from animals and birds I have gathered. This fall for instance I was able to get a few Canadian and Snow Geese, some Ruffed and Spruce grouse and a Sandhill Crane (all of which I might add were mighty tasty). Unfortunately I wasn’t sure exactly how to handle them so I plucked a bunch of ‘interesting’ feathers from various locations on the birds, put them in ziplock baggies, labeled them and put them in the freezer. Not a bad way to do things but not ideal. Recently I began to research how to properly process and preserve and found this site. www.uky.edu/~agrdanny/flyfish/petti.htmBasically a link to the questions I wanted answered. With trapping season in full swing and fur prices in the toilet I will hold back a few incidental low end Red Squirrel, Ermine, Mink and Fox and see if I can preserve them for some added materials. Merry Christmas everyone Dean

Thanks for the info. You sure are closing the loop in the back to basics fly fishing in quick order. You tie flies from the feathers of birds you hunt. The best I have done is tying some streamers from the hair I was able to clip off the dogs tail while she was sleeping. They have kept fairly well.
