Hey all,
I got out to Lockport for a quick fish early this eve hoping to hit some drum but noticed lots of what looked like surfacing/flopping channel cats. I was on the river close to where the floodway meets it. I’m new to the fly fishing game, so I threw a couple different wooly buggers and nymph’s upstream of them with no luck. Just wondering if anyone knows what they might have been eating (tough to see with the foam/bubbles on the water)?
Also, is that typically where fly fishers will go? I haven’t done any fishing (spinning or fly) in Lockport before.
Water was real low too, for those wondering.
Thanks! -Colin

Thats where iv gone the last 3 times. Easy to wade out. i usually drive to the end of that road and I wade straight out across that little bay towards the rock in the water. Iv caught lots of drum and a few cats but the other day I only fowl hooked a big carp.
I too am new to fishing lockport. I have seen people fly fishing right under the dam but Iv never tried it. I had all my luck on heavy leech patterns that get right down to the bottom.

As a general rule the the closer to the bottom the better. I fish downstream but my buddy fishes upstream. I use a sink tip line and add a few BB shot if needed so I am close to the bottom. Cheers Ron

It really has slowed down...for me anyways. May and mid June was very good. Anything black with a little flash was keeping me busy all day. Now I got to use boat with shrimps to get cats.. keep trying, good luck, Bob.

When you see Cats slashing the surface chances are they are chasing minnows. At this time of year the Freshwater Drum fry are all over the place. A small blue and white clouser works wonders. As well if you see Cats rising close to the shoreline put on a frog imitation, tons of leopard frogs around right now.
