I’m new to fly fishing. tx Bob I’m sorta new to carp fishing but they’re pretty fun to sight fish for in small rivers. They were rising for elm seeds once- so it was cool to use beige dry flies, but I think usually you have to look for actively feeding fish, i.e., snout down and tails up splashing around, and sinking flies. Be sneaky as they’re super spooky with loud noises or bad casts. Ive used a longish (7-9’) leader and often cast beyond the fish and slowly pull it in right in front of their mouth. Or they’re at the shore 5’ away and you can dangle the fly in front of them. That’s about all I know.

Most fun fish to catch on a fly, at least from 24 species I have caught. Make sure you have proper gear (8wt+, good reel and lots of backing). 95% of time I use floating line and mostly crayfish patterns.

Thanks...I’ve seen them feeding in Florida. Here they strolle back and forth along the dam wall. Yes they spook easily but they are very curriuous alway checking out each fly I present. Im guessing they are about 10 to 15 lbs...my 7 weight rod could take a beating! thanks for your replies.

I used 6, 7, 8, and 9wt at lockport, got carp with all of them. For sure it is fun fighting 30+lbs pig on a 6wt with 3x tippet, it all depends how much time you wanna spend with each fish and how much space you have. Last week I caught 8 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday. After getting 4th fish I pretty much had to stop because there was no room to cast anymore. About half dozen people moved in my spot trying to catch them with spinners and pickerel rigs and spook them all. So when you get one make sure you have lots of space since most people here will not move out of your way. Some provinces have those things mandatory in their fishing regulations but not in stone age Manitoba.

I hooked a couple big ones on the south east side of lake MB, oak point? There is a public boat launch, in a reedy bay. I watched the things swimming around for a while, and casted in front of them, can't remember now the pattern. Anyway, hooked into a couple, using my 8wt set up, played them for quite a while, got them close, just to watch them get bored or spooked and bugger off until my leader gave way. Big fish, weird experience.
