I found a sample online for catching Chum ("dogtooth") salmon on a certain river on Vancouver Island so tried tying a few.
To this very simple fly, I've added a UV Epoxy coat over the tinsel body, and also to the thread head. The hope is that the epoxy will give it some durability so these toothy dog salmon don't chew the heck out of this rascal.

Looks like Ira Pratt's fly . He's well known along the Sooke River.

Any tips for other patterns I should make and take?

Karluk Flash Fly has been one of my best ; Bead head rolled muddler ; leech patterns; wooly bugger ( especially egg sucking patterns) . I tend to keep things sparse and small...size 10 is my go to. Ty a lot on Hanak competition hooks...super sharp and very strong. If you want info on the Sooke..parking , etc. or examples of the flies and recipes I can message it to you. Just assumed its the Sooke you are looking at...there are lots of other rivers with great fishing. Don't expect most locals to help with info a lot...you are just more competition.
