Anyone hit lockport for some carp and cats on the fly lately? Haven't been out fly fishing for a while now and would love to finally hook into a nice fish on the new fly rod!..

Fish the main river channel, the floodway has no current to speak of so the fishing would be a little slow there.

The water in the main channel was way too high and add to the fact that I've never actually waded in there. Always just stuck to the floodway and had great results. I know there's a nice shallow spot downstream of the dam where fly fishermen congregate whenever the water drops. I'll try there when the water goes down.

I was there Tuesday evening, 23 August. Fished the main channel. Landed two cats in the first 30 mins, then quiet for 20, then a sauger, then quiet for 30, then 5 goldeye in about 10 minute. Several nibbles. Easy to wade 100 feet in the main channel, slow current, used an intermediate line.

Not much to report but oh well. Went out yesterday and totaled 5 sauger 1 walleye and 4 goldeye. Went again today and only got 2 goldeye and 3 sauger, but I got what seems to be the only drum in the river right now so yah.

Fished Lockport tonight. Water level went down significantly since Tuesday (Aug 30th). The islands have surfaced. Started quickly with a goldeye to warm up the muscles, then a 36-inch cat within minutes. Followed by a 34 incher a while later, and a 34 inch carp to cap off the evening. Cats surfacing everywhere, including in fairly shallow water. Got help from a shore fisherman for a pic of the carp, but the tail is out of the frame - oh well! Attachments:

Didn't fish today but went out and checked lockport anyway. The water is really low, the lowest I've seen it this year. As bambooaddict stated, a bunch of islands have sprung up down the river. Guys were out in waders casting out into the current. It was extremely windy but some guys were having luck, saw a few goldeye and sauger caught. The CO were down there when I was taking my stroll. Struck up a short conversation with them another the pelican zone. Some of the islands were within the border of the zone so watch where you're fishing so you don't get in trouble. Otherwise it's okay as long as you're not feeding the pelicans and leaving potential hazards like tangled line. Will head out there tomorrow bright and early for some early morning catfish. Itching to put the new fly rod to the ultimate test. Will post a report either in this thread or start a new one.

I went out yesterday early morning but it was so windy it was difficult casting a fly. Managed two decent sized sauger and on one of my last casts hooked into something heavy. I'm assuming a carp cause it swam straight for me like a rocket and broke off right in front of me. Lots of cats and carp surfacing in the shallows. I was tossing wooly buggers and nymphs if anyone is wondering.

Was out right now, that one guy standing in the river while it's raining lol! Caught a few sauger but the carp were surfacing around me like crazy! They kept bumping my line and splashing around me, so frustrating. My friend dropped by for about an hour and he quickly caught a 32 inch carp, on a jig! Hey petroh, what fly were you using for those catfish? I was tossing nymphs, streamers, buggers and pretty much whatever might work with minimal success. It doesn't help that I'm using a sinking tip line and I kept getting snagged on rocks. If it stops raining, will head out later.

Im planning to head out again for the evening before the river levels rise tomorrow assuming the rain does stop, so I might see you out there. DDH leech is the only fly you need on the river in my eyes lol, I usually only switch to a nymph when I want to narrow down my fish to specific species like goldeye. The current there was low last night so floating line will be fine as long as you have heavier weighted flies, personally I tie mine with some kind of lead or lead eyes to weight it down enough to get to the bottom. If I see you out there, I'll for sure help you out.

Sure, I'll probably drop by later with a friend and fish the duration of the evening. I'm not sure I have any ddh leeches in my fly collection. I do have a floating line but its on my 4/5 wt trout rod and no way I'm taking that out below the dam. I knew I should have bought that on sale w9f9 line yesterday at the fishin hole. Dammit!

Might as well post this in here instead of starting a new thread. Went out to lockport again this evening to give those catfish another go. Met up with petroh and waded out into the main channel away from the shore anglers. I started out tossing a small leech pattern hoping to catch a few goldeye for the smoker but quickly changed to a ddh leech after petroh hooked/snagged a decent channel cat. It was about ~10 minutes after he landed his when I felt an abrupt tap on the line. Set the hook and fish was on! Big fish, immediately started heading down stream and slowly had to follow him. Another 15 or so minutes pass by but still don't have the upper hand. The fish then swam down towards that bay and unfortunately got snagged on tree or rock. Spent the next few minutes trying to unsnag the line but no luck. Had to reel it in as close as I could and break the line just where fly line meets the backing so lost my fly line and leader . Oddly enough, don't feel too bad about it. It was a great experience, the adrenaline rush alone was worth it. My arms are still burning from all the tugging and pulling. Will purchase a new fly line and will be back out there soon, prepared for a rematch

Actually I wish people would make a separate thread for each Lockport adventure. 2/3's of the fishing happens there and every year we get one or two threads in this section with dozens of reports.
I guess people are saying it is all the same there in spring or fall whether catfish, sauger or goldeye.
