I attended the REEL paddling film fest last night here in Winnipeg and one particular film caught my interest. Boundary WatersAbove is a link to a website petitioning to stop the proposed mining outside the Boundary Waters National Park in Minnesota. This park is adjacent to Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. The waters there run west into the Rainy River watershed and from there the water runs to Lake of the Woods and into the Winnipeg River. They have started this to protect their local economy, the lakes and wilderness, and the general way of life in the area. I find it compelling because whey predict up to 500 years of polution from one of the worst types of mining there is. I haven't done all my research yet on how that could possibly affect things way up north here, however I am smart enough to realize than no pollution is better than any pollution and I agree with their cause. Call it selfish if you want but I'd rather not have the chance of my favourite lakes and rivers East of here polluted with sulfuric acid. I enjoy the area the way it is now a few times a year only, but would like it to remain as is -even if it is my grandchildren who might be more at risk of this affecting our area. It appears they have been noticed and a bill was created to hopefully kickstart a path to protection. Give it a read and sign the petition if you agree with them. Bobby
