Okay, so you've made a slow retrieve from the bank of a slow-moving creek or river, high sticking your woolly bugger right to the bank, because sometimes you get hits right there; what's your preferred method to get your line out there again? Is there an "approved" method? Thanks.

Why not try a simple Roll Cast?

How did it get out there in the first place?
In tight condotions I use either the 'wrong roll cast or the correct roll cast.
if there is more river but not too much backcast room I will t-snap or snake roll.
too much cover? I drift cast
As well, as part of the fun/challenge of small creek fishing is backcasting through the little holes in the cover.

Many times I start things off with a roll cast. Here's something else I do...
If you have a really short line, when you back cast don't put any tension on the line and just let the rod move and the line stay still for the first half of the back cast. This has the effect of lengthening your line. During the 2nd half of the back cast grab the line and do it like you normally would. If your line is still pretty short, you can repeat the process on the forward cast.
Did that make any sense? I read about this in some article Jason Borger wrote; he had a slick name for it but I can't remember.
When the line gets longer, and you are taking your regular back cast, shoot some line on the back cast.

How did it get out there in the first place? I usually move the rod tip back and forth while feeding out line so that I have a loose pile of line in front of me on the water - kinda like the situation you have when you do a poke. From here I just sweep back and get a D loop goin' and punch it out. After I retrieve I repeat the above, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat... As a first time fly fisherman I'm just curious how everyone else does it. Thanks for your responses - good ideas.
