Anyone get out ice fishing yet? I'm thinking about going next weekend and trying for some trout. Ice should be thick enough to walk on safely on most trout lakes I'd think. Wondering if it's worth heading to Patterson or heading to the Whiteshell for some trout.
Any suggestions of what to use? I've never ice fished for anything other than walleye, pike and lake trout. A friend of mine suggested small jigs and Berkeley Gulp 1" minnows. Said he did really well on Tokaryk with em.

I was at Patterson a couple weeks ago and we had the best success with a 1/8th oz white or pink jig head tipped with a berkley grub. The water is clear enought that if you are in a shack and it's dark you can see the bottom and watch the fish interact with your lures. The biggest Rainbow we got was 23", and 19" Brown. Gonna try to add the picture of the 'bow.

Anybody ever try chironomids through the ice? Seeing as they are usually dangled down vertically, they would seem to be a natural fit...

We'll be on Patterson this Saturday. I'll be using some Scud flies on one rod and an ultralight tube jig on the other ( white or pink or chartreuse with the tail clipped off ). Hope weather is good.

We only managed to land one and lost six. While we were there someone in a pickup truck drove across the lake to ask us how thick the ice was and if we thought he could drive on it ( ?)

Bahaha, what a goof eh?
Too bad about the fishing but at least you got some action! I've yet to get out with the short sticks. It's been a perfect start to the hard water season for those who have ventured out! The temps are definitely more than manageable, although the wind seems to continue to be a tyrant. =^S
