I have two reels that don't have the capacity to accept 100 yds of standard 20# backing line. I like the insurance of having the a full 100 yds of backing on a reel. So, I purchased a 150 yd spool of 30# test Tuf Line XP to use as backing. This stuff is much thinner than regular backing so I should be able to get at least 100 yds of backing onto my reels.
Has anyone used Tuf Line XP for this purpose and if so were there any problems with it? I am concerned that because it is so thin it might cut into the fly line when using a nail knot to attach it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I'd sure hate to see my flyline part company with the backing under stress.

I have Tuff Line on my 6 wt. outfit, and I have had no problems with it. Should not be a problem for you.

You might be safer to use an Albright knot for the backing to flyline.

I've "straIght-horsed" (LOL) a few tail hooked kitties that got me into my backing with no issues using Tuf XP.
I like the albrite knot for connecting leaders to backing. Having that fly line double'd up is very reassuring, especially when dealing with that 150 foot length of finger slicin' string.

Thanks guys, that's reassuring. I'll try the Albright knot but if my fly line parts company I'll send you the bill. ;D

never hurts to apply a nice coat of clear-coat on the knot after you connect the two, as well
