I tried this set-up for the first time at William Lake. It was a 10 weight shooting head on an 8 weight rod. (Apparently, overlining the rod by 2 is pretty standard with shooting heads.)
The head was 30 feet long and it was a type 6. It is WAY easier to cast than lead core. (For me, lead core has a tendency to dive bomb into the water on the back cast.) I was worried that the braided mono running line would get tangled on my tube. But it behaved just as well as most regular fly line I used. (Note: I never had more than 20 to 30 feet of running line in use.)
The head made it easy to get down to 15 feet while trolling and scratching the bottom in 10 feet of water was easy on the cast.
