Well, when I fished at Lockport the other day and got into the cats, I forgot my gloves. So what, you ask? I have stubbornly clung to my old fly reels, insisting that no one really needs a disk drag. Well, this trip, after getting my fingers beat up during catfish runs, I'm crying uncle. But, true to my cheap ways, I thought I'd seek the wisdom of the Board: Is there such a thing as a good disk-drag reel for under $100.00? If not, then what price? (After all, only 125 sleeps 'til Christmas!) TIM

I use Cabela's Prestige Plus, Pflueger Trion ($159) and Okuma Sierra ($45) and Integrity ($70).
All are in the $100(ish) area but the standout price/quality ratio for a mid arbor reel is the Prestige Plus and at $50 USD (on sale for $40) is well with in your budget. (spare spools $25 )
The Trion Looks the coolest though.

I'm a fan of the Pflueger Trion and Okuma SLV. I started out with a disk drag and couldn't imagine not having one.

I borrowed a brand new Cabelas Prestige Plus reel from a buddy when the drag on my Cabelas #3 SLA failed completely after approximately 8 days of hard use (Barbe L. Bows). The drag of the borrowed reel failed completey before the first day was done. Cabelas replaced both reels, no questions asked. I love the SLA design and I do have a another #2 SLA reel. I disassembled the drag of both my SLA reels and found metal "filings" in each of them. I presume they were from the machining/manufacturing process. I'd advise anyone with these reels to inspect the drags carefully before using them to avoid unnecessary grief on the water.

Maybe check out the reels offered by Albright. (www.albrighttackle.com) I finally entered the new millenium with a Bugati for my 7 wt. and a GP for my 9 wt. They were on sale for 50% off when I bought them and I believe they are holding a similar event now.

Thanks for the suggestions, folks. I just ordered a Cabelas SR, which was 1/2 price ($100.00) before I found out about the Albright sale. It is a bit disconcerting to read about the failures reported with Cabelas reels. I do love their no-hassle return policy, tho. Speaking of failures, While I was working with one of my cheapo reels (a panther martin), it fell out of my hand and on to the concrete floor of my basement. The base snapped off! This is a year of breaking and losing ...TIM
