For those of You that don't have great fly stores, shopping online can be frustrating. Receiving products in 3 weeks can be tough in the Summer months. I have recently re-ordered from an E-bay store called Togen's out of BC.
This was what I ordered first and second combined.
Size 10 scuds 100pcs
size 10 2X nymph 100pcs
size 10 1X nymph hooks
size 1/0 4X streamer hooks 100 pcs
size 10 dry fly hooks 100 pcs
size 6 natural bend hopper hooks 100 pcs
All orders came in 100 packs, the first order was $36.00 + $3.50 shipping and the shipping took 4 days. It was a 500 piece combo pack mix and match 5 sizes and types for one price.
Here are the pro's and con's
Pro's
Shipping, very cheap and very fast/
hooks are nice and sharp
The price is very good.
Con's
2% of the hooks are flawed, not bad % though over all.
Barbs can be hard to pinch on them especially the bigger sizes.
All eyes are down turned.
Nymph hooks don't seem nearly as heavy as other brands.
Dry fly hooks seem rather weak I mean compared to other brands.
Gold color drives Me nuts especially when I tie a lot in silver.
Overall I'd rate Togen's a 9 out of 10. Convenient, good shipping and pretty good product. If You don't de-barb test each hook in Your vise though and find the 2% before the fish do.
I feel I got way more than My monies worth here and will definitely deal with them again. The price of a single order of 100 hooks can be lower than a 25 pack of eagle claws, now for those who want premier quality maybe skip this one but the fact is I did over 20 carp on the same fly using these nymph hooks and the fly is now just too dirty to fish anymore. If You are looking for a good alternative and cheap costs for a too soon to come Winter of tying, check out Togen's online. Aside from that I have discovered the world of aberdeen hooks at Canadian tire and the fish don't notice the difference so yet another possibility.
