It was a dark and stormy morning...
My son and I fished the Floodway outlet Saturday morning, arriving at 6:00 am to beat the crowds that didn't show. (People are smarter than I give them credit for.) Weather was brutal, but the shore was protected from the worst of the icy blasts.
He fished with b**t under a bobber and I worked a clauser from the north shore. Nada. No evidence of fish feeding anywhere in this stretch.
Water levels were good and I had no trouble working flies through the runs, along the bottom. Clarity in the channel is O.K, ( close to a foot) but much less in the main river.
Saw guys hammering cats on the west shore, directly opposite the outlet, so we tried that. Turns out that this stretch is pretty ffer-friendly, with a gently-sloping bottom that's less bouldery than the east side. You can wade out far enough to get a decent angled cast upstream - at least us lefties can!
Cats were breaking the surface regularly along the shore and all across the river, but I couldn't produce a hit. Neither could my son with shrimp. We left around 8:00, fingers aching.
Chatted with Stu McKay after. Don't know what that tells us for ffing, except that these fish a probably way more selective than anglers give them credit for.
Another interesting observation: Stu is now a ffer! He has a fly rod hanging from the ceiling of the store. He's caught a few last year and seems keen to do more...TIM.

My brother was in from Vancouver this weekend and we hit the north shore of the floodway as well, and we had no luck either. His first fly fishing trip, and first fishing trip to Manitoba. Needless to say he wasn't impressed with the conditions.
Same as Tim and son, we froze. We also left around 8 to go fish up near the locks on the east side, After about a half hour of this, we went for breakfast at the Selkirk Smitty's, and went up to End of Main campground.
The fact we got skunked at Netley Creek on bait tells me that the fish were down deep and not interested. Even the bulls should have been hitting on something in that time frame (it is unlikely they were hook/rig shy). The only people we saw having any success were as Tim indicated, fishing the deep channel at Lockport.

I had similar sucess in the red on Sat.(none). Although i was north of lockport.
If a lot of the smaller fish(goldeye) are not in the main channel of the Red yet, where are they? Are they in the small creeks??
I am thinking of paddling around in Cooks Creek this week to check it out.
Anyone intrested?
Any tips for creek fishing?

Cook's Creek:
Where would you be fishing on Cook's Creek? Near the mouth? When my kids were small, we used to fish the stretch that you can access by heading south from East Selkirk, The creek is narrow there and there is a nice pool d/s of the bridge. We caught rock and white bass...TIM

ya, thats exactly where I was planing to go, just downstream of the train bridge there is a fairly large pool on a corner. I paddled up there about two weeks ago and there were some fish surfacing.
Thought there might be some carp, goldeye, maybe even pickeral and pike this time of year.
What time of year did you and your kids give it a shot?

I seem to recall catching white bass early in the season. It was probably opening weekend or close to it, we bushwacked upstream a bit and I recall that the leaves were not out yet. The rock bass were caught later in the year, when some weeds were in evidence. This year, with everything so damned cold and delayed, I don't know how to assess things...TIM

Heh. I was there at Lockport early Saturday as well, about 6:15, with my 12 y.o. son. We froze to death in the wind near the fish ladder, got one small cat and hooked what must have been a sturgeon or an enormous cat. Twenty minutes of fight and that thing was still in total control, then I lost it..javascript:adds(" ") Angry Tried the fly gear but very hard to get the fly where I want it with the water so high. Was planning to go to the diversion outlet. Sounds like it's good we didn't.
