i went out for the first time ever last weekend and got a small one. so small in fact that if i could do it over again i wouldn't, thought it was a lot bigger. still though it should be nice and tender, any one else had any success?

Kevin, i have never hunted for bear, but was able to taste some a few years back. A guy I worked with hunted and had some mystery meat at a bbq. Found out later it was beaar. If you have never had it before, I found it VERY greasy, and gamey, but not terrible. Would I eat it again, probably not, but I am not a big wild meat guy to start off with.

i have to say i like the hamburger but not so sure about the steaks. they are not overly gamey, but have a different taste, unlike venison or any domestic meat. and the meat is a very dark red

Have had the enjoyment of tasting some a while back - it definately has its own taste (although can be likened to pork, or greasy ....) - it's different - I like it ......... then again, as the wife says - I eat strange foods what's strange about head cheese, horseradish, radish, wholesome hearty foods Never hunted them, as even a 300 pounder would be too much for our family (as much as they like wild game - I don't think I could get them to eat it). Yeah ... can see it now - go fishing / hiking / camping - meet bear .............. go bear hunting, see fish, deer and great scenery (and no bears) ...........

Not to mention that as soon as you go hunting, the fish will be practically jumping out of the water at you. Of course you took the gun instead of the rod so your outta luck. Then again... if the water was clear and shallow and your gun was angled just right James.
