I'm gonna do it. After years of fishing some pretty decent mod - lower-end rods, I'm finally going to take the plunge and buy a high-end rod.
I've always had my heart set on a Sage XP, but alas, did not move fast enough to get one before they were discontinued. I know about ten fellas who fish XP rods and each of them absolutely love them.
I have heard some good things about the new Z-axis rods, but do not know a soul who has one. Are they all that?? Anyone here have one?? fished one??
I can still find the odd XP on ebay (mostly used ones), so they are around to some degree yet. Should a fella look to this old and very proven model or venture into more of the unknown.
I'm looking for opinion/ feedback. Appreciate your responses.

Compared to the Z-axis, what is the typical savings if you buy an XP rod on E-bay? This would probably a good question for www.danblanton.com. The bulletin board on that site is a little more global than this one; they love to discuss high end fishing equuipment. If you searched the archives, there may even be some old posts that deal with a comparison between the two. All I can say is that I've wiggled a few XP's and to me they seem to have a pleasant action - firm but not super stiff with a responsive tip that recovers quickly? (That's starting to sound like something you see on a wine label... Subtle yet fruity with the old world suppleness of oak and tanin.... )

as well there are many shops across the continent that are clearing out XP's this has slowed as the after market value of these rods has soared (ie...people love them)

Two years ago my family bought me a Sage VPS for my 50th birthday (locally, at the Hole for way more money than I'd ever spend on a rod ). It's a 9', 9wt. After plenty of use and comparison to cheaper rods, like the streamside elites, I now know that I'd save my money and buy the latter. My sense is that you are paying a heckuva premium for very little real gain in performance or quality. (What really floored me was finding out that, to execise the warranty I had to pay shipping AND $40.00). Looking back on the purchase my loving family made, I should have taken the money and bought two perfectly fine, complete outfits for more or less the same coin.....TIM

I have a couple Sage Fli rods which are by far my most favourite. I also have TFO, St. Croix, Streamside and Fenwick ranging in size from 4 to 10. The other rods are quite good but my personal favorite is the Sage that I have.
Great action for casting and catching.
I do not own any of the Sage high end rods. I believe the Fli rods are in the middle of their price point and are more than adequate for our needs. Sorry I am in no position to compare them.
At this stage of winter I would gladly take the worst rod available if I could get a day in the pontoon boat!!!!

Hey Lesco,
What size/model(s) of St. Croix do you have?

We have a size 7 9 foot imperial model. Quite a nice rod. My wife uses it as her main rod for everything from trout to pike.
