Hello everyone,
I just wanted to relay some information that I have on the fishing of George and Forbes Lakes.
Every year we have made it a family tradition to head out to George and Forbes lake for a day full of fantastic fishing. Let me tell you my experiences...
We wait until very late fall (usually late Sept or mid Oct) and then set a date accordingly. The fellow who takes us out is named "Rick" and he owns "George Lake Outfitters" at Eight Foot Falls.
We usually arrive at Eight Foot Falls at 7:00 am and he takes us across to the portage where you hike into George (takes about a half hour). There are boats available to you at George and you head out from there. We have fished George several times and had some luck near some of the islands that have rock points. It is incredible to see giant lake trout all over the points. George lake is crystal clear. However, because I have been using "devil's gear" up to this point, I was able to only land a few as I was using a 5 of Diamonds.
Through our experience, we now skip fishing at George and head straight east across the lake to the portage that takes you into Forbes lake (another half hour hike). At the end of this portage it gets real rough. The trail practically ends right at the Lake and you have to work your way through the forest a bit until you get to a rock point that has more boats on it (unfortunately not part of "George Lake Outfitters"). Anyways, from this rock point you have access to alot of water and you can walk the shore on low years. The water in Forbes is pretty clear but slightly stained. Clear enough to see the trout though.
All I can say is hold onto your rods! The Trout in there are so aggressive and wild that it makes for an intense fight everytime. I can only imagine how this year will be on fly gear. On average the trout weigh 5-10 pounds and up and I believe they are Lake Trout? I can be wrong... doesn't really matter though.
Recent years, snowmobilers have found our trout haven and have fished it really heavily in the winter. It really sucks as we used to catch over 50 trout some years but now find that the winter fishing takes a hit on them. I am a C&R type of guy and usually will only keep a couple for a shoreline fish fry with the family. Something should be done to regulate this lake better from the damn poachers. Still fantastic every year though...
If you are looking for an incredible time on 2 amazing lakes let me know if you need more info. I will post pics from past years as soon as I find them.
