;D Hey the great Lake Minewasta/King Fisher lake Crappie transfer is on for June 18-19-20th. The event is being co-ordinated by the Manitoba Fly Fishers Association. Lake Minewasta is located 5 miles west of Morden on Hwy#3. All interested Fly Fishers/ and nonmembers) are welcome. We need to put fish in the Transfer Tank!! Bruce Cameron will be picking up the fish from everyone out on the lake. If you are fishing from a boat /canoe or belly boat that does not have a live well pick up a wire fish basket and keep it over the side of your boat or belly boat. I have done Bass transfers this way without fish mortality so it should work fine for Crappie. These are available from any store that handles fishing tackle.Colert Beach Campground (204-822-4991) will be our base camp. Reservations are recomended. Those looking for a motel accomedations can contact Morden Super8 at 204-822-2003. Both canpground and Motel are on the Lake. The g*lf course is also near by. You can contact Janos Boda at janosboda@hotmail.com

How many crappies are they planning to transfer? I think another crappie fishery is a great idea but since Minnewasta is just down the road from me, I don't know if I could actually bring myself to participate...

We are hopeing to take 2-3 hundred. It will not hurt the fishery at all to remove that many from Minewasta. This is exactly how Bass have been moved around the province and it has given us excellent rresults. It's kind of like makeing Sourdough bread. you always keep some behind for the next batch. If there is concern about taking fish from your local Crappie fishery ask yourself how they got there in the first place. Like the Bass fishery it actually helps to take some out. The Bass in William came from a transfer just like this. If we want to keep our fisheries growing we need the locals to see that this is a good thing and nobody is stealing "YOUR" local fishery. The MFFA has been involved in Fish transfers since 1986 and we work with the fisheries branch and proper permits are obtained to do these transfers so I think we know what we are doing. Is anyone coming out this weekend?

Don't worry, John... I'm just kidding around! Starting another crappie fishery in the province is a great idea...
Are you expecting the crappie to be in the shallows? I have to admit that I have yet to venture there this year.

Rob, I don't really like floating around amongst power boats in bower either but I still do it cause the fishing is generally good, and most guys by now know that if they get too close, I'm not too scared to cast my fly and hook them in the head and drag them into the water. I asked one guy from here that was sneaking up on me cause he seen me catching fish if he felt like jumping into the water and grabbing me out of my tube and rushing me to the hospital because I was missing a leg. he got the point and actually he hasn't been on the same side of the lake as me since. ;D I'm not actually mean but I hate when people have no respect. If you read in any boating manual it says to stay clear and respect smaller craft than the one you're in. Next time you come to William you should let me take you to Bower and I'll show you that it's not that bad. We can go where the boats don't go. That's where I do most of my fishing because it's normally better than anywhere the boats go. I'm sorry if I'm trying to pressure you into tubing with other motor boats I'm just tryin to prove a point. Did it work at all Rob. Just a tiny bit even? ;D Ryan

Ryan I have heard that the boaters on Bower are "not too bad" but it only takes ona and having been in one boating accident (in a 'real' boat no less) I am not in too much of a hurry to repeat the event in a glorified inner tube. There are plenty of fish to be caught without risking my life for.
Now if there was a way to access those places w/o tubing through the boat lanes......

More info on the crappie transfer:
The fish-transferring tank should be at the lake on Friday 5 PM. Hopefully we can fill it up with water and 6 PM you can start to put fish into the tank. We did not plan too much fishing for Sunday; we have to get back to Kingfisher Lake until 10-11 AM.

;D Well the great Crappie transfer is history. Meet a couple of guys from the board, RickL was out on Friday evening. BookemDano and TurkeyT were out on Saturday. There where 16 people out over the weekend. Friday evening was the hot night for fishing with around a hundred caught for the transfer. Saturday saw a lot of recreational boaters, skiers and kayakers out on the lake so I think it put the fish down a little. The wind also linited the areas that we could effectively fish. Another 75 where caught and put in the transfer tank on saturday. The siszes of fish on average where larger on saturday with a few in the 14 and 15 inch range caught. The west end of the lake has a roped off section which is great for belly boating and no motor boats are allowed in there. Collert Beach camp ground is an excellent place for family camping with a nice beach and camping facilities. One of Manitoba's premier g*lf courses is next door and there are mountian bike trails all over the area. Lots of things to do in Morden which is just across the lake. I fished with TurkeyT and had a great day out on the water ( sure beats mowin the lawn) ;D Sunday I had planned to do the golfing thing but the weather closed in so everyone headed back early. The fish all made it to King Fisher lake safely and are now getting used to thier new digs. We had agood mix of fish year classes and we have about 15 - 20 that may even spawn this month in King Fisher so I think it was a success.

I would like to say Thanks for everybody who helped with this transfer. We really hope the project will be successful at the end and we would have another great crappie fishery in the province. Another transfer in the future? Well you never know! Thanks again, Janos Boda
