I have been intrigued with the idea of getting in to Mud Turtle lake. It seems there is some pretty good smallie action in there. It is located just a short distance north of Brereton lake in the Whiteshell. Has anyone been in there and if so what is like for tubing or working the shoreline?

;)Hi Rick it was nice to meet you again. Boy you sure know how to ask the tough questions. Well it just so happens that I was involved in the Bass transfer that put them into Mud Turtle. In the 1980's The Manitoba Bass Anglers and the MFFA Where reponsible for transfering Bass to many areas in the province. We had several outings at George lake in the Whiteshell where fish where transfered to other lakes. The year we seeded MudTurtle we Transfered about 300 Bass. Everyone carried colapsable baskets in their boats and when they where full we would run them over to a holding area at our camping island. People would then put them in large garbage cans and transfer them to a large pen at the outfitters landing and then they where flown into Mud turtle by float plane. We lost very few fish in the transfer and they responded ver well to their new lake. I will be giving a slide presetation at the MFFA spring intermediate Fly tying sessions on this very topic and area so check their schedule for the date. As far as access to the lake I came in by Air but there are 2 trails into the lake. The shortest one comes fron Lake Brereton and I belive is marked on the park map. The lake is not that large and would lend itself to bellyboating quite well. I have not fished the lake myself but have heard that it is quite good . Maybe someone can post some first hand fishing reports on that. Caddisguy

There ia a portage but you still have to get your self across the lake. Or drive the cottage road on the north shore and find your way from there.

Rick, Actually it is on the west side of Brereton, and as Robert mentioned, you need to get across the lake, in order to access the short portage, which is located directly behing Webb Island, and yes there are a few nice reefs flanking the island. Very good bass fishing, but more for size than for numbers. Lots of slime to keep you busy between bass, but maybe a bit frustrating getting your favorite bass flies ravaged and stolen. Aaron Wiebe

like aaron says it is on the west side of brerton lk. the walk in is about 10 min. and the trail is nice and wide. it is a nice lake with big fish. but again another backcountry lake portage littered with derelict boats and garbage!
