Has anyone heard what the plans are for Kingfisher Lake in Bird's Hill Park? I had talked to a CO in the fall and there thoughts of crappies or smallmouth being introduced.

The Crappies would be sweeter. GGGGGeeeees !!!!!!!! I wonder who came up with this Idea We have lots of Smallies in the province aready. The kidds would have lots of fun with the Crappies which are hard to come by in our province. After funding for the project and setting up the aeration system Parks waffled again and decided the lake might be a hazzard if the wind mills where left running during the winter ( soft Ice ) at the aeration points. I'd like to know who makes these decisions and what cryteria is used. There is no activity in the park right know that is risk free. I mean Boy Scouts with knives, Skiers with sharp poles, and what about those out of control Rollerbladers. Unfortunatly the Parks decision makeing proccess is hap hazzard at best sometimes and inconsistant the rest of the time. Caddisguy

You make a good point on how wimpy our society has become. I have students who go camping through their schools but it resembles camping only barely. No fires, no canoeing, no tents but lots of indoor activites like crafts. That said last March or April i was at Kingfisher lake for a walk and there was a father and son jumping on the ice near some open water I guess as well as becoming wimpy we are also getting stoooopider Although we do have plenty of smallies we don't have much locally. But if that rather expensive aerator can't be used the pond might not be much good for most fish. I guess some MFFA members are feeling a little burned with that thing they paid for sitting idle...

Wimpy - who you calling wimpy ?? I know a certain individuals' in-laws who go 'camping' in RV, with TV, VCR, microwave, air conditioning....... (ok - my in-laws). Got so bad - when the daughter comes camping with us (tent, sleeping bag, fire for stove/light) she complains that there's no TV to watch, too hot/cold. As for stoooopider - well ........ just watch the news or some of the reality shows. I mean, who in their left mind would walk up to a polar bear and expect it to purr and play nice ! Back to fishing - smallies/crappie/whatever tehy stock in Kingfisher - without the aerator in operation - I don't think there will be much chance of a sustainable fishery.

There was supposed to be a meeting with parks and the new King Fisher (MFFA) comitee. I havent heard any scuttlebutt from there yet but when I do I'll pass it on. The beauty of the lake there was that it can be drained down every few years if there is a problem with intruders like Pike or Perch. The ironic thing is the parks people erected the aerators themselves but I quess the opertunity for an ICE FISHING derby was too much to resist for someone at Birds Hill. I quess we'll have to see what Transpires in the near future. My vote is still for CRAPPIE'S.

This is from the MFFA website:
June 19-20, 2004 Crappie Transfer Outing (tentative) If plans proceed to stock Kingfisher Lake in Bird's Hill Park with crappie, we will have an outing to Lake Minnewasta to obtain fish for transfer.
I think this event is not “tentative” anymore, and the transfer will happen on the posted date.

MFFA is having a get together at Kingfisher Lake on Sunday October 17th. We want see how well the Crappie have servived the summer. Record what you catch and report back to some one from the MFFA or just put a post in this thread. Take the west parking lot trail to the beach and the west trail from the beach going south. There is a large sign at the wheel chair access dock so you shouldn't miss it. <((((>< ;D

This is the latest report on the Lake from the MFFA.
Funding for this project came from 3 different funds.
- $20,000 from Special Conservation Fund
- $ 25,000 from Fisheries Enhancement Fund
- $ 10,000 from Fish Futures
Project was started in 2000. Some money from the initial 55,000 is still left for future work .
Here are some of the proposed initiatives for the future.
Interlake Region Fisheries Manager
- Develope a 5 year stocking plan. - Develope and oxygen monitoring plan to be implemented this winter. - Aguire an oxygen monitor (cost about $1500 from MFFA) - Prepare a are quest to regulate Kingfisher Lake with a 1 fish daily limit, artificial bait, no motor regulation.
Birdshill Provincal Park
- buy and install a third aerator to improve winter oxygen environment ( cost about $1200 from MFFA ) - monitor oxygen levels in lake in winter. - remove clay plugs from between islands to allow better circulation , trout to escape shallow areas and better navigability of the lake. - pave walkway from bicycle trail to fishing dock to make it more accessible for wheel chair traffic ( $2000 from MFFA ) Relevel dock and improve foundation of dock. - Install signs for thin ice and keep away from aerators.
MFFA
- promote use of artificial, single hook fishing and catch and release and other conservation measures through seminars at the lake. - provide money for above initiatives. - create plan for final development of Kingfisher lake. - submit applications to FEI for more funding if required.

Great Info John But it could have used a thread of its own

Nope Rob it is in the right thread. Wanted to keep it with the train of thought that was already established. To many threads on one subject and the train of thought gets lost.
