While up at the Ducks the past couple of days, one of the kids at East Blue lake resort told me that some Americans had caught some pike at Line Lake. Maybe, if we are lucky, some of the muskies may have survived, too. I was told that there was some natural musky reproduction in the past. Maybe a remnant population may survive?

The last I heard was yes there was probably a partial winterkill (winter of 2002-2003).That means there,s a good chance the big mature spawning muskies probably took the biggest hit(during winter kills its the larger fish that require the most o2 so they,re the 1st to go!).Pike were never originally in the lake ,probably got in around 1997 or 98 .That is why the musky did so well.In a small lake such as Line the pike can in just a few years become dominant because they spawn earlier and the pike fry will overtake the musky fry eventually. Well my guess would be that there are still musky in Line,(probably nothing over 30 inches) because of the pike combined with this winters KILL(2003-2004) they probably won,t be there for long and I would suggest that a new musky Lake Initiative be developed.(see MFFA) We don,t want to test net because we could possibly be wrong and I think it would be a shame to pull up a net with 3 dead trophy musky in it!! Just keep passing on fishing reports that may be critical(eg..I just caught a 44 inch musky) to local (Brian Yakes, ,Manitoba Conservation ,Swan River) authorities.
