We had our first board chat last night. John (caddisguy), cane and myself talked till after 10:30 and hey it was mostly fly fishing and tying. We exchanged some good ideas and had fun beating the winter blues!
One thing that came up was talk of a get together. We also talked about having different themes for chats.
The advantage of chats on the net is that no matter where you live or you responsibilities you can attend an online "meeting" ('cept those of you who only access us from your jobs)
Last night i put my kid to bed made my dinner ate it while i typed and was also doing time codes on a recording. All (except the putting to bed part) while or in between typing.
I'll check with "the boss" to see if ican do it next thursday but the beauty is i don't have to be there for you guys to join in (i just need some one to say they'll be there to act as a greeter/moderator)
good stuff guys!

Hi- I have to agree with Rob- the chat was a fine way to touch bases- and was a very enjoyable way to explore some ideas. Two hours wizzed by before I noticed:) Setting up some themes is a great idea. Perhaps we could do a tying chat- post a pic of the fly/ or a specific technique for the night/a list of ingredients and the host walk through the tying step by step. Just a thought

Hi guys This was my first kick at joining a chat. It was fun and the 3 of us got know each others favorite waters a little better. I agree that a topic to chat at might well be the best way to go. We perty much went around the Province during our favorite waters discusion..The more people that get involve the more important it is to stay on a subject other wise it would become hard to follow or keep up. My keying is quite slow but the chating does make you pick up the pace. Lets see how many people show up at the next one.Anyone have some ideas on topics? Caddisguy

well cane thought a "tie a particualr fly" chat might work but an evening dedicated just to tying might be a place to start. And then move into specific patterns. I for one would like to find out more about some patterns that are proven Manitoba gems. Ya know the ones that aren't in any books. We could have a "i don't have a boat of any kind so where can i fish that i haven't?" night A casting talk A gear talk A talk on board get togethers both now and on the water. A talk on connecting with more fy fishers outside of Wpg A "mentoring" talk. Kinda of based on the story cane told in chat. On the net i have found there are a lot of fishers who own fly rods but tried it on their own lost the battle and put it away. These people could use some support to kick the bait habit and get on the winning team! rb

I'm afraid I missed chat night, but to follow up on Robert's comment about people trying ff on their own - a friend of mine is a real keen fisherman and had tried flyfishing a few years before I knew him and had given up in disgust. I coaxed him into taking his rod out one night when we went out onto our local river. He did not know what the difference was between backing and the flyline and had only the backing on his reel. " Can't cast worth a d__n!" Actually I was impressed he could get out the fly as far as he did, but what a production!! A little info would have gone a long way there.

Just a little more on Rick's freinds delema. Stu and myself havedone numerouse FF schools, Sportsman Shows,Boatshows etc.The number one comment we always got from people was,Ya I bought a Fly rod and tried it but couldn't cast it. Or they will say that some handed a FF rod down to them but they didn't know what to do with it. It seems everyone that shows up to these events has a Fly Rod siting at home.I think the most difficult thing for people to learnand the reason people give up so quick is the casting. When you buy a spinning rod or a closed face reel all you have to do is press the button and chuck it out there. I've been casting a Fly Rod for a quarter of a century and I still have lots of improvements to make but I can get a Fly to a fish and thats all you need to do. most people that buy fly equipment don't get amatched out fit or they've been handed some old tackle that has no identification on it and their lost. Even if you went into the Fishin Hole now as a novice and Stu wasn't there you would be hard pressed to get a balanced outfit. I like to steer beginners to the combo pacs that are sold by Scientific Anglers,Cortland or some of the other companies. These packages come with a Rod, Reel, Backing, leader,an instructional video and sometimes Flies. The SA ones are about $150 and it includes everything. I spent a lot of hours by myself practicing but it is definitly more advantagous to get together with other people. You can learn so much by watching other people cast. The surveys that did at the last couple of MFFA schools was that everyone wanted more casting time and instruction. Just let everyone know what school we will be meeting at Rick.

Sorry about not mentioning the location- its Silver Heights Collegiate on Lodge Ave in St James. It is just off Portage avenue a couple of blocks down Lodge from Moray. It would be a right turn from Moray onto Lodge if you came from Portage. As you come up to the school turn down the back lane to get to the parking in the back. At night just ignore the reserved signs- everybody else does, including staff. I'll post the directions later too.

It's amazing how a convesation on a board chat turns into one on casting. Just goes to show you how much people want to learn on fly casting. Rick the dates I have available are Feb. 3, 4, 12, & 23. Let me know and I'll be there. I have to also agree with John on his statements about novice casters. In order to cast you have to know someone who does cast. That is why John and myself have been doing schools etc. for the past 20-25 years. We are still passionate about the sport and will take any opportunity to instruct or promote the sport. anyway before I turn into a wind bag I'll say adios until next time. Stu
