For anyone thinking about heading west this year, or any time in the future, this is unsettling news. Picked it up from the CBC news website.
TIM SOPUCK
"Ecologists warn of Bow River troubles Calgary - Weeds and algae in the Bow River are on the verge of causing an ecological disaster, as they slowly choke the river and reduce the oxygen available to fish.
Lee Jackson, an ecology professor at the University of Calgary, is halfway through a four-year study of the river system. He says his team is still trying to determine what is causing the explosion of algae and weeds in the river.
Jackson says their growth is partly spurred by increased nitrogen levels in the river, but they haven't been able to determine where that nitrogen is coming from.
He says a high spring runoff and lots of snow are needed to scour the riverbed and prevent fish from dying next year. Mountain white fish and trout would be the first affected, Jackson says, because they can't survive on low oxygen levels.
"We're going to see some localized areas of low enough oxygen concentrations that we could be looking at a fish kill," he said.
The weeds and algae need oxygen to grow, putting carbon dioxide back into the water instead."

Personaly Tim I think there are just to many calgarians ppping in the river The last 5 years there have been below average run off form the mountians. the snow pack is quite good this year out west so here's hoping the Trout have better water conditions. They are also putting water meters on residential homes there now and this may also have some impact on water discharges into the Bow causing lower flow down stream and warmer water temeratures and it could be a combination of things. I know the fishing has not been as good there in the last few years. Caddisguy
