As the snow and temperatures fall I look to the weekend and see there might be a day on the plus side. So I am thinking I might head somewhere and do some fly fishing. So I ask you at what point do you pack it in and call it quits for the year? Already have, soon or till the all the water is hard?

Don't really stop - am beginning to prepare for the icefishing season. With today's equipment, clothing, etc., there is no reason to go into hibernation until open water next spring. Started icefishing back when my sons were just entering their teens and have come to look forward to the hard water season. In many cases, hard to reach waters become more accessible in winter. I think if you give it a try you just might come to enjoy it.

Well i meant when do you pack it in with the fly fishing. But I go Ice fishing about once of year so i can get skunked, freeze my @$$ off, get bored and remind myself how much I hate it. I don't hibernate I just don't ice fish. I ski, hike, bird watch (the ones that stay) and do (very) amateur outdoor photography. That said I am not against ice fishing it just ain't for me, just like fly fishing ain't for everyone. I realize this board may become a ghost town over the winter but none the less I do not wish to talk or promote normal (bait, gear, ice) fishing. I'd rather talk fly tying. Or talk our dreams for the next fly fishing season. Ice fishing is very common and popular here and I would hazzard a guess there are way more ice fishers in this province than fly fishers before we factor in that some fly fishers may ice fish. This board/site is about the promotion of fly fishing and tying in Manitoba. To all who will be hitting the hard water or hunting I wish you very good luck and I suggest you check out (if you haven't already) walleye warrior's site he has a section devoted to talking about ice fishing and another for hunting. You do bring up a good point about access. Bagguley Lake is supposed to be awsome for brookies. It is stocked by air every 2 years and is very hard to access. So the fish grow long and large! Is there a way other than snow machine/ice fishing it? Maybe a road or trail or would i need to use a ATV??

Hi
Well scraping ice from the eyes of my fly rod so i can cast usually does it for me so i,m done:))) Hey my rod is,nt loading very welll aha the line is frozen to the eyes-lol , , replay of last years last trip to the Whiteshell R in late October:) . Robert- i was planning on sending you some pattern pics of stuff that has worked well for me from Scotland to here and points in between( when the macro digicam becomes available- maybe in the next week or so) . Perhaps - we can develop a fly tying chat in IRC? some online means of helping each other out with tying tech? Or organize an informal meet where we can bring along flies and swap/talk/ and see where it goes from there- maybe a stream group, a stillwater group, warm water group -i dont know - just throwing out ideas:)))

There has already been some talk of a get together with fly tying being the back drop. Mostly aimed at beginners but it will really be determined by how many are interested in it. If just 2 or 3 then we could do it at someones house. But if there are more then Rick L has offered up a class room at his high school. I believe it is Silver Heights. So it is wide open. I might suggest that it be in November and/or December. As the MFFA takes a break then and we could be bridging some kind of gap with out seeming to be in any competion. You don't have to wait for that camera (unless you want to have step by step in the vise pictures) John D clued me into away of doing it with your scanner. If anyone of ya wants details ask me. Last year and this year I ended my fishing on the Whiteshell River with a temp of 0 and ice on the line and in the guides (actually it also happened in early October on the Red this year) so ya the casting takes a beating but if the air temp is above 0 (even 1 degree) and the water is open, without too much wind, then I am game. I hear the Fairport River is open all year round!! rb

maybe the Fairford River...?
If there is enough interest in a get-together yet this fall, I would be willing to open my pond up to a gathering of fly fishers...this being said, with the size of pond, and limits to my hospitality, I am not sure that I want a vast number of people, other than those directly and substantially involved with contributions to this site...

Well you can count on me to fish your pond... ;D It's your place so you can make the choice. If you just want to make for posters (not readers) then just click on the "members" link in the bar top of each page and see who has made a post. I think that is about 28. Some may not be able to come as they live out of province (3 I think) and some live out of town ( I don't know what area you live in) If that is still too much then you can pare it down by only inviting people who have around the same number of posts or more than yourself or set a number you want (X) and invite the top (X) posters. (hey Rick L that algebra does come in handy.) Then set a date and directly email the ones you want with the date, time and directions. Maybe we can work out a bbq menu or something. (I'll assume no fishermen are vegans ) BTW do you have an aerator to keep the pond fishable 12 months a year? Just a thought if we have a warm spell up the road a bit....... The weather this Sunday is supposed to be ok but it might be short notice for some. But we can hope

I do operate an aerator on the pond to ensure that sufficient dissolved oxygen levels are maintained, but this does little to keep the pond open in winter. Whereas, even directly above the most intense bubbling, a layer of ice forms on a typical -30 degree night. Brrr...
The pond is, nevertheless, "fishable" for nearly twelve months of the year, for those of us who adapt nicely to hard water....
The high for the weekend is around zero degrees, and therefore I think that the possibility of such an event will be postponed for possible warmer weather or spring.

Hi I think spring sounds like a great idea- a litle pre season casting warm up- . I live on the Seine R in Wpg and do my pre season practice there- btw- there are goldeye and carp running the Seine:)))
Robert maybe a thread- asking what folks are having trouble with tying- dry fly proportions/wings/wet fly proportions/dubbing/hackling/ etc might help in focusing in on what type of tying aid could be done over the winter. IRC chat is really handy- just download MIRC setup a room/lock it out for those without a password- i,ve participated in weekly Maya(3d animation software)/Mel /Animation Rigging discussion groups this way and it works and is inclusive for those out of town.
