i'm looking at replacing my line on my 5wt rod, it is a cheap crappy line that has to go. i'm not the best caster around by any means so i'm looking for a floating line that will be easy to cast and not too much over 100$. there are so many choices, any recomendations?

Pretty much just stay with the big 4, AirFlo, Scientific Angler, Rio, Cortland when it comes to lines. I would stay with a WF line, with a basic taper for a five weight (assuming your throwing basic regular flies , nothing huge). You don't have to splurge and get the high-end fly line, most of the mid range fly line (50-80) will do just fine. I use Air Flo exclusively, I like there stillwater designs, and find that there line is bullet proof ( No cracking, strong core) ( Ridge lines need to be cleared regularly) . SA in a close second, there new lines are nice, and good quality. Mid Range Suggestions linklinklink

I currently possess fly lines from all four of the manufacturers listed previously. I agree with the durability remark for Airflo and I also appreciate the way they have innovated lines for stillwater fishing. I have also had very good experiences with SA and Cortland. The last manufacturer listed elsewhere in this thread makes many kinds of fly lines and I have owned about a dozen of them over the past decade or so. I suspect they control most of the fly line market. Their lines fish beautifully initially, but they do not last. My biggest gripe is they regularly show extensive cracking and peeling of the coating. They make a stillwater line that is absolutely deadly, but I'm no longer willing to tolerate failure after less than 10 days of use. Its just unacceptable.

Sorry about that, Starting to look like most of the big box stores don"t really carry Airflo any more. Crowsnest Cafe Talk to Susan, she'll help you out and can probably ship you a line. Highly suggest you give her a call (no pst). Backwoods Was working in Ft. St John this year and these guys have the biggest collection of Fly Lines I've ever seen. They probably have a 5wt line that's a year or 2 old that'll be 50% off. This outdoor shop is loaded with fly gear, and at the lowest prices I've seen. Fish Tales Calgary has them too, but hella expensive. Airflo Fly Line suggestion Airflo Super-Flo Stillwater Line (built for indicator rigs) Airflo Superflo Universal Taper ( awesome all around) AirFlo Sixth Sense Fly Line ( best stillwater sinking line on the market hand down can usually find them in discount bin for 50 bucks) Airflo is a little more pricey, but they last for ever. (if it is a ridge line clean them often! )

Agree with everything. My only input is I really didn't like the Ridgeline. Performed well, but high maintenance and I found it is really hard on the fingers when stripping it in all day or hand fighting fish. The ridges seemed to cut up my fingers, like lipping bass all day.

I’ll give crows nest a call and see what they have but I might have to look at your other recommendations

just thought i would give an update on my flyline search. i ended up getting some scientific angler in my price range. i was able to get out today to try it at the local trout pond, i almost didn't go cause of the wind but i'm glad i did. what a difference from my crappy line, i was casting and shooting line like i never could before even into the wind plus i land a few rainbows.
thanks again guys!
