Well, not only did I almost skunk (except for one tiny perch) today at Lyon's Lake... I went hiking down some trails trying to get to a spot of the Whiteshell River hoping to save the day with a smallmouth, and stupid me having my rod sticking up caught it on a tree branch and snapped the tip! Worst part is I didn't even break the rod on a humongous fish but on a tree branch of all things!! Anyway, now looking to get a new rod... considering the two rods below: What do you guys think? Any suggestions on a new rod? I am hoping to stay around and under the $200 mark... www.cabelas.ca/product/125471/st-croix-mojo-trout-fly-rodwww.cabelas.ca/product/83424/fenwick-hmg-fly-rodAlso was thinking to get a 7wt rod this time around, my old one was a 5wt. Would the fly lines i had for that be completely useless on a 7wt rod or would it be usable? TYIA!

I think it depends on what you like to cast. Both St. Croix rods I have are quite stiff (fast action I think it is called). I find it easier to cast this kind or rod, however it is less forgiving. It seems to handle wind better, and throwing weighted flies is easier. Have not tried Fenwick rods so I can't say if there is a big difference in the casting.

Can you repair the tip? The MFFA rod building group may be able to help, maybe one will chime in if you don't already know them.

Hm yeah that's a good idea, I might look into that. My wife got me this rod like 7 years ago so with the sentimental value I'd rather repair it if possible. Thanks for the suggestion!

Cabelas has a couple more of their Synch rods in the bargain cave for ~$75 in a 4 piece 5 wt. Usually $169 (also on sale for $118 right now).
I bought one earlier in the season to replace a cracked reddington. Casts nice.
Then it fell into bauer lake somewhere between the middle and boat dock (my strap holding it on the kayak wasn't strong enough). (also got skunked that day)
so I bought another one...

I would go with an Orvis rod now available at Cabela...because of the warranty until I learn not to break my rods.

Cool shopping for new gear !!! lol ....Believe it or not when I first got into fly fishing I bought the Prestige starter kit from Cabela's mind you this was years ago but I assume the blanks are still the same and I love using that that rod. Cheap option for backpacking in if it breaks who cares. Anyway would be nice to be able to try them before buying them that's for sure. You may want to take your reel(s) you plan on using with the new rod and check to see if its tuned/balanced to the rod. Don't have to match fly line to rod exactly check this link out pretty good info www.scientificanglers.com/choose-right-fly-line-weight/

Almost 50% off original!! Looking forward to try out this new rod in some BC waters I’ll be sharing some pics with you all throughout the next couple weeks we’re out here
