Hopefully this warm weather bodes well for getting out at the end of the month. Our annual event took a strange twist last year. Our Facebook event ended up in public circulation and a sweet spot was monopolized for the day with non-fly-rodders. Nothing illegal just lots of garbage strewn about and and the usual bait-chucker stereo types reinforced. Soooo I have a created a private event on FB but contrary to popular trends I.E. the demise of message board like this, we are only going to talk and promote the event here. Closer to the event I may create a What's-app group to sort out meetup, car pooling and weather/day deciding. So Either Saturday April 4th or Sunday April 5th Weather dictated Car pooling encouraged Fly Fishing Only Not too early a start Who's in? You can also pick the day you prefer but I'd rather have it be the nicest day Feel free to ask questions if you are new to the sport or this event

Also I don’t have Facebook or social media so the whatsapp group is a great idea and also keeps it much more private

It's literally the only thing I am looking forward to. Having said that, we'll need to stay open to less carpooling (Luckily gas is dirt cheap) Also fortunate that fly fishing is the very definition of physical distancing during social interactions

Do we have a date set? The recent state of the world has my schedule opening more and more. I wonder if we might be SOL for a meal up there though? I have a truck, can drive, can bring a bbq and some smokies or something if need be.

I hear ya I just got laid off until further notice so either day would now work for me. And looking on the bright side of things, more time for family and fishing lol
I’m so looking forward to this, I can also bring a portable stove and some burgers or something for the event.
Are we going to be opening up a whatsapp group chat for this soon?

Alrighty folks if we are going to do this I think we need to move the date up for a few reasons 1. Cabin Fever 2. The best weather is sooner than later 3. There is the odd chance they might lock down the province since copying other places seems to be the dominant strategy.
Some things to consider: There are 2 native reserves on either side and, one of the main concerns from MB health, is C19 ripping through one of these places Almost EVERYONE has the days off and it may actually be crowded. As a birder and hiker the numbers on the trails and in the parks is staggering (they even put locks on the gates to the English Gardens) How would a small town/community feel about a tonne of strangers descending on them during a time 'some think' is a quarantine. At a time when the relatively new terms have shifting meanings? (social distancing is 'supposed to mean' physical distance during social interactions but some think it means staying at home which is self isolation, or some sort of vague term that covers everything going on right now etc. etc.) As none of us are from the same household, we wouldn't be following the true protocols (not the Karen ON FACEBOOK ones or the ones being used in more crowded and tourist ridden places) if we car pooled. So we'd need to go in single cars gas is cheap but if 4 of us go up in four vehicles (or 6 or 7) our presence would be more obvious.
I am seriously considering not going (as much as it pains me) but I can be talked out of it.
6 weeks from now the protocols may (or should) be lifted, and regular season will open up. Maybe the fishing Gods will be kind and give us an early ice off?

I think if we stagger our activity, it will be less obvious. For example, if a couple of us go each day, it will not be the impact we fear might cause justified recrimination.
I think we should try going sooner than later, before the provinces closes down all activities like this. With the spikish nature of our numbers the last couple of days, I am worried that they may clamp down on this.
Just my thoughts. I am busy work days, I am still teaching from home.

I’m all good for going earlier than later too and Stephen brings up a great point of staggering, maybe we can spread the event over 2 or 3 days depending on the total count and go in groups of 3 anglers per outing.
I’m excited for this event and think if we just make some minor adjustments to plan around the current state of events we shouldn’t need to call it off! How does spreading it over a Saturday and Sunday sound for you guys?

well in the time it took to put up the last post things have changed so I am cancelling this event as it could potentially contravene the gatherings over 10 rule now in place by the gov't of Manitoba. Nothing to stop any one from going on their own but I need to negate this being an organized event.

Alright folks, hopefully this whole thing blows over soon and we can put another get together perhaps in the summer. Hope everyone stays safe!

I would really not mind a summer get together. I know that other fly fishing clubs do this, but as of yet I am not a member in any of those. The closest thing that I have to being in a fly fishing group is this.
For me, having a set date and location meeting people that I know through the internet, is very appealing. It gives me time to plan for a certain day rather than hoping that I might run into one of you while out there. And even if you are out there, on certain lakes I might not even know it.

I will give this some serious thought and is a great idea, inline with many of the reasons I started this place!
