First off I want everyone to understand that I have no aversions to ice fishing although I am not a regular participant. I have had some conversations with people who are DEAD against ice fishing. One person in particular states and I quote, "Ice fishing kills almost all fish caught when released. We do NOT do that as we are sport fishers, strictly C&R!" What reactions do you have for such a statement?

What reactions do you have for such a statement? 1. Ill informed. 2. Went ice fishing with dubious companions. 3. Probably spends the winter in southern USA.

This is from a guy where. We don't of the amount of lakes that you have Also our population expolsion ,has had a dramatic affect on our fisheries.Personally if the records show a NON aerated lake consistently winterkills. Then assign a catch limit.C&R Means just that. But to allow ice fishing on the waterbody, with C&R IS plain STUPID.Especially if your trying to establish a Trophy fishery.Cell phones & pictures have made for dramatic fish kills.Think about this .You catch a fish.Haul it out onto the ice.Destorying the life giving protective slime. That is now frozen onto that ice.Next take a deep breath, hold it.If you think you can take that picture, release the fish. Before you pass out, sign up for USA Seals.T.I have watched these fishermen, they catch a fish.Do the backslapping handshaking, take picture or 2.Then they do the unceremonial boot that thing down that hole. BECAUSE they can't take it home..Against Ice Fishing

"Ice fishing kills almost all fish caught when released. We do NOT do that as we are sport fishers, strictly C&R!" What reactions do you have for such a statement? Well it's 2 statements The first one I kinda agree with. Gut hooking and then exposing a stressed fish to sub zero temps or an overly warm ice shack, makes ice fishing and C&R almost an oxymoron. You'd have to have some pretty specific (almost mythical) set of circumstances in place to allow for any sort of of high rate survival. The second statement is bunk. Fishing is what ever you want it to be (within the confines of the law).

Did you have any facts or research to share, or is this just an opinion pole?

NO, I have no data to support or dispute statement. I was hoping that perhaps someone with that type of info would post such info.
Still hoping!!

One of the interesting things is the dearth of research on C&R mortality for ice caught fish.
You can find lots of "if this, this and this are done along with this, this and this" will lead to higher survival rates (Usually published on ice fishing pages of tourism sites and so are quite self serving)
So if you jig, without bait, with a barbless circle hook, lip hook, play the fish quickly, handle the fish minimally and resuscitate correctly (which would mean holding your arm in the water and letting it swim away), it has a good chance.
Conversely, if you gut hook with a baited tip up, take your time to get it out, leave it out for the phone pictures and just pop it back through the hole and say a hail Mary, it has a low chance.
Which one more closely represents typical activity on the ice?
