Finally getting around to posting my Sooke River adventure. Bottom line..it was fantastic. New friends, broken rods, lost shooting head, and of course the fish. Chum salmon to be precise. The numbers were not as great as they cab be , but the fish were there. More importantly they were willing participants. The first morning started off great. I had the pleasure of meeting and fishing with brothers from Manitoba. Two great guys who got into fish right away.
And voila. First chum salmon for them.
Then this happens.
Broke my rod tip on my third cast. Thank goodness the cell service there is good. Phoned my daughter for my spare rod. Then phoned the fly shop and bought a new 8 weight switch rod which was delivered to me by friends who were coming down to the Sooke. All from the river shore. I am one lucky dude. Spare rod in hand and....
Chum salmon heaven. I pretty sure that Conrad and Gerald both had a good time on the Sooke. They definitely got into fish.
Although at times I was wondering if they were there to fish or to watch the bears
These were two great individuals whom I had the pleasure to share some great moments with. I hope to share some more adventures on the island with them, although they may have second thoughts after I sent them up river were the chances of getting into coho was better then proceeded to land 3 coho in a row. Some friend.
A pretty nice coho....sorry guys.
After three great days Conrad and Gerald went back to a beleaguered Manitoba. Two days later another friend arrived and we hit the Sooke for retired MP Robert Sopuck to tie into his first chum salmon.
Well done Bob. It was another day of fish tiring us out.
Unfortunately for Bob the skies opened up and with lots of rain the rivers were blown out. However it was still a great time.I also learned a bit more about the Sooke which I filed away for the future. A great place and a great pursuit.
By the way the new rod performed fabulously.
