Hi Folks, I am a professional boat designer and boat builder, and a fly fisher. I am designing a line of boats that are suitable to the fly fishing market in bigger open water, so 15-19 feet with 25-90hp tiller outboards(or maybe remote steer as well) and capable or crossing some rougher open lake weather if it gets rough, in welded aluminum construction. What I am looking for is input from experienced fly fishers as far as the features they would love if they were in a boat meant for bigger water, fly fishing for big pike, musky , bass, walleye, lake trout, etc. Possibly a cool winter dream, let your imagination run wild here and let me know the features and sort of boat you would love to have if this was your big focus, big water fly fishing from a boat. If you have input please feel free to respond or provide your personal feedback via PM or email. All input greatly appreciated.

A raised casting deck/platform with a rail you can lean on for stability while standing-especially important on big water where there could be some good sized waves/swells. The rail could also be fitted with a (removable?) stripping basket to help keep line from tangling or getting stepped on.

Things that seem to be common on various fly fishing boats is the ability to go into shallow areas and ease of getting in and out of for wading. Probably not compatible with the big water needs we might fish locally

I am sure you have thought about it, but fly rod stowage is a necessity, particularly given the rigors of rough water. Something padded and secure to keep gear from getting dinged or broken and safely contained in the boat. Lots of designs out there that could be suitably modified (trays, tubes, hinged cabinets...).
Good luck with your project. Boat junkies like me will be real interested in what you come up with.

Sure did. I incorporated a lot of the ergonomic features that are important to fly fishing from a boat into a recent design. Ill post some pictures and follow up soon on this. Thanks again for those that provided input.
