What you should really do Bob is take a day and drive S.W. of Calgary for a couple of hours to the Crowsnest Pass area. Hit the Crowsnest and Oldman Rivers for some great dry fly action for cutthroat, rainbows and browns. Stop in at Crowsnest Angler Fly Shop (in Bellevue right by the Frank Slide) and buy a map that the owner Vic created which will give you all sorts of locations and access points. They will also give you info on what flies are working. Check out their website to get reports on water conditions, hatches and flies to try. Unfortunately, the fishing report hasn't been updated for a while so the info that is posted is out of date right now. www.crowsnestangler.com/mainpanel.php?option_sidebar=report

Many years ago I was at a conference in Calgary. anticipating I might have some spare time, I had stuck a 4 wt into my luggage. I ended up renting a car and driving around town looking for some river access. I ended up finding some and to my surprise caught a bunch of nice rainbows. I still remember the ticket for me was a small streamer (or it may have been a larger nymph) fished on a fast sinking line.

Current report from Fish Tales Fly Shop in Calgary on current Bow River activity. Might be worth stopping in and chatting with them to get more information. They are an outstanding resource.
Flies to try:
Nymphs: San Juan Worm (SJW), pheasant tail, chenille stones, caddis pupa, copper johns, prince nymphs.
Streamers: gartside leeches, clouser minnow, squirrel leech, fruit roll up, skiddish smolt, flesh eating sculpin, kreelex minnows
Dries: Skid Bitch, Swisher's LSS Chernobyl, Real Stone, Catch's Hopper, White Cloud hopper, Evan's Baby Foam Hopper, Bloom's Parachute Caddis, Swisher's Dancing Caddis

Thanks for the info...definitely planning on stopping by the fly shop to stock up on some supplies as the picking is slim here. Looks like I may need a few more flies...

You'll find more brown's in town below the 22x bridge. In fact i would focus most of my attentions around the 22x bridge, policemans or Mckinnon flats area. You should also realise that we broke a high temp record yesterday & today forecast is even higher 37-39 cel..Good luck...
