Hello Everyone!
I just picked up a fly fishing rod this year. I live in the Winnipeg area, and have mostly fished (with spin gear) in eastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario (Whiteshell, Nopiming, Minaki, ELA). I also do quite a bit of canoeing in the area. I'm all ears in learning how to get into this sport!
Thanks! Phil

A great way is to tag along and watch the fly group at Lockport. They used to go out Tuesday evenings. They can help you out. Fly anglers of ANY skill level, including first time casters would be welcome. As you watch the group, you will see a variety of skill level anglers there, all having a good time no matter how they cast.
Some of the group are more friendly than others, but most of us are introvert-types, so you gotta warm us up a bit. Someone else who is more regular will tell you the times more specifically.

Have you been able to cast the new rig yet Phil? That is a pretty daunting thing to get used to when new. I've been at it for years and still kinda suck. If you have a hard time getting going, I'd be willing to give a couple hours of time and meet up somewhere on a big open lawn to help get you going, or pass along my bad habits at least. Wear sunglasses if you have a hook on the end of the line. Another option is joining the Manitoba Fly Fishers Association and doing a few of their sessions, sometimes there is a school put on in the spring that covers all the basics of the sport. Some great fishing to be had in the area you mention, especially the ones where you have to hike a canoe in like the ELA.
