The second week of October found me back on Vancouver Island. Armed with my switch rod I headed for the Sooke River. Water conditions on the Island were very low and the salmon were slow coming into the rivers. I was in luck and the salmon were there as the following picture shows For two days I fished the Sooke with good success In addition to the chum I was lucky enough to land two coho; the second of which was the largest coho I have caught be it out on the salt or on the rivers Also happened on this unlucky angler who found out you have to be careful with those teeth the chum own. Yes a fish had thrashed and caught his wrist with its teeth and end result was a trip to emergency. The third day I headed up Island to visit the Little Qualicum River. Again water levels were low and there were fewer salmon than on the Sooke. In addition to the chum I was lucky enough to land this awesome chinook. The fish is black as it has been in spawn mode for a long time and yes that is roe being expelled as I held the fish for a photo. My fourth and final day I was back on the Sooke . Beautiful morning at what is referred to as the clay bank. Lots of fish around ,with some very nice specimens landed Note those nasty teeth I was referring to. There is always something interesting in addition to the fishing. This bear was looking for some tasty salmon. Finished the trip with this nice chum Now I can hardly wait for next year to visit this wonderful country. It was most definitely a great trip.
