Just a question that crossed my mind... when the heat of the summer picks up is it to risky to bring trout up from their cool hiding spots for a CPR? Is mortality a problem if the fish is played little, handled carefully and released promptly?

IMO The quicker that you can get the fish in,handling as little as possible. But if all the above doesn't work for you. Then a long rest, making sure the fishes gills are moving & wants to swim away.

Well there are a few schools of thought and methods at hand.
1. Not fish for them at all in the hot days 2. Only fish early morning or late evening 3. Fish for them anytime do careful and gentle C&R
OTOH Are we just being careful so some meat hunter has more fish to bonk on the head. Or for some Ice Hole to gut hook, get a grip and grin photo while the fish's eyes frost over to swim away and die (if it doesn't get bonked on the head)?
I figure if it is legal and you want to then do it.
My personal way is #2. To slip in when the air and surface water has cooled a bit fish.
Just a thought...in places where they value the salmon and trout as a resource and economic stimulator...they close waters if they get too hot.

Well, it's legal to drag trophy walleye up from a 60' hole and toss it back to die with the bends... what is legal isn't always best practice. Personally I'm not against taking home a meal once in a while, but I don't want to be accidentally killing fish out of ignorance. I will probably call it quits after the afternoon heat picks up...
