Well i have decided to try and build a fly rod yes try is the key word here. So anyways to make a very long storey short i wanted to make a super small bamboo fly rod strictly by hand and with what i had on hand. This rod i was to build is specifically for very tiny spiecies and minnows nothing more! And try to do this by hand but being limited on such materials as bamboo and other things i found away kinda no its not a perfect example of proper made bamboo rod i relize this but it is as close as possible to what i want and thought of.. i tryed to design this micro sized fly rod as small as i could! Strictly for catching minnows and other super small spieces nothing over 5 to six inches at max and heres what i came up with So far What i used was the following 1 pack of bamboo barbeque sheeshcabob skewers and that costed a whopping .99 cents! Enough bamboo to make several rods! I used about 8 or ten bamboo skewers A fly tying bobbin with brown silky thread 1 small exacto knife 1 bottle of Gorilla glue for wood only used a few cap.fulls maybe over the whole rod! Some scrap stainless steel thin fine wire for the the rod eyes A small fine pair of plyers and a old fine paint brush for glue coats! Three old wine corks for the handle which.i have not.glued in place yet! Have not figgured out the reel seat yet Or what i.should use fer line or a reel !! Pics of the rod soon to come To.date i completed the crude hand made bamboo rod intact with eyes but yet no handle ect as above! Would be interesting to get some feed back on shaping the cork handle or a reel seat TOTÀl time to make one probly all together 2 hours maybe not including glue coat drying times ect

Sounds pretty neat! What are you using for a reel? Fly line?
You could probably shape the handle on a drill using sandpaper. Maybe tape on the reel using electrical tape.

Sounds like a fun (& interesting) build. Keeping it simple and by hand. Really appreciate that.
What overall geometry did you turn it into (hex, quad)?
Sounds like a lot of bond lines, but nodeless rods are much the same. As long as you have a good taper between pieces (fore and aft), should hold up to bigger fish than you think (don't underestimate the strength of bamboo).
Neat sounding none the less. Any pics?

Yes pics soon to come as the lighting conditions are changing here so much i find it hard to get the right pics and amongest of a thousand other things going on but yes STAY TUNED BUT REALLY why? To me its a terrible interpretation of bamboo flyrod but i did try and will be fun to.test it And something that has been on my list to try and do As for it .being in a octagon or hex shape strip construction no it is not but is possible to do.with it.. When under exsperimentation with the straight bamboo skewers i noticed one.can split it equal in many parts with a exacto knife say in 6 parts if desired but why bother?? When a guy can just taper one piece of it w Down it or wittle it.to.desired thickness? For the tip.section i mean and u can even make it.in ahex or octagon angluar lengths just wish they stakes were longer Then it would be as simple.as taper.it.down and add eyes and a handle but who knows one may find a affordable is easy and good bamboo product out there One other interesting thing i did notice the rod actually Arcs nicely under loaded line weight/line pressure Ha! I.must.assume it is cause of the eye guide placements on the rod and not the crudely thread wrapped glued and bonded sections of the rod to get its desired length!

Harry Harry thanks for the idea i was thinking that with the tape too but leaning towards Some sort of metal rings or zip ties As for line i was thinking of horse hair or antique silk thread i have many diffent strength threads from antique sewing.machine cabinets.i have collected over the years i.may even.use the wooden spool thread bobbin and try and.make a some sort of reel

For that DIY look you could use hose clamps for the reel. I've been thinking about building a microfishing fly rod too and looked at building a small fly reel myself, along the lines shown here. I'll also attach a PDF file about making it. Home made Fly Reel.pdf (622.77 KB) classicflyrodforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=25046 (hopefully you can see the post without registering) The rod I'm considering is put together by joining a couple of different thicknesses of carbon fiber rod together. All great fun! Harry

In a sense i think a reel is not reely even needed or nessary to keep it as simple and pure as possible i may just configgure to bamboo pegs to wind excess line i figgure most line i will.need is about 12 ft at max probly no more than 7ft from tip of rod to any small.stream.or creek or.pond i care to dabble in with it

Now you're talking tenkara without the price tag.

You have a custom made, bamboo, short tenkara rod. You should try .008" to .010" fluorocarbon leader material as a fly line. Harry

Looks great, I love it! Think it can handle a 10" creek chub? I take back what I said about it being a tenkara rod, they don't have line guides.
I think you need one of those mini reels to handle that giant creek chub.

Thanks for the kind words Yes perhaps a reel is in order The pics dont show how small the rod is the tip section is a bamboo skewer is split in 4 and only.one piece.of the four pieces is used for.the.tip section... 2mm to 5mm taper one length for tip its triangular at thinnest part last eye guide of the rod As for what size fish i think it.can handle? a small 7 to 10 inch trout maybe max very 10 being max load thinking stream brookies I know for certain a bigger 2 pound grayling would snap it any wild northern creek current in a second.once that hook was set But a smaller grayling under a pound or under i think it would handle with tender care of course
Some bigger perch would.snap.it.quick.but smaller perch.no.problems Small.goldeye mooneye under 8 inches Basically any small.minnow bait fish hook size i may use 24 18 16 14 maybe 12
It would.be intense to cast a micro sized pike fly and catch a micro sized northern.pike ha! Cause every tiny pike have caught is a exact replica of a big northern pike and act like a toothy critter!

Sounds like a hoot! I've caught 2 inch pike and channel cats and they both looked exactly like the adults. Problem is, I've also caught big channel cats on #14 flies. It'll be interesting to see how you do this spring, please keep us informed.

I wouldnt quite consider this crude twig of a rod really a rod more.so.just playing around abit, so i have no idea why these posts made it in the rod building section? But thats up to you i was thinking maybe in the off the cuff section? Anyways doesnt really.matter.i suspose

And next time i make or try and.make a bamboo fly rod i think i will.not even.add eyes and go tenkara style!
eliminating the need for reel and seat section

Maybe try looking for a crappie pole reel. I've seen them for $3.00 at Academy in the States. Don't forget, with a reel you can handle any size fish within reason but with a tenkara rod you've only got the strength of the rod to fight the fish with.

True enough i heard if u catch to big of a fish on a small bamboo fly rod or tenkara rod , while fishing a small stream a good sized cork handle is important. One can try and fight it out as much as possible by the rod walking the creek ect but one other last option is simply to let go of the rod! Just calmly lay down the rod in the creek and let it go! Heard a stream trout will always generally head back.to.where it lays in the creek. basically you just let the creeks current and the rod play it out for you so u can retrieve it after!! Now i never tryed it yet but if it came down to it i would take a gamble! Let go of the rod sit back on the shore line line relax have a smoke of fine cigarette and wait ! Just keeping a.eye on the rod as it drifts in the current with that lunker still attached!

Where I normally fish tenkara the water is often cold and deep and the bottom muddy. I prefer to have a tippet that will break off on a bigger fish.

Nice, real nice. If you can find some sort of plastic rings the size of your cork handle you can friction fit your reel right onto the handle. You could also sand down the cork to fit some rings that are smaller then the cork you have. Thanks for showing us your project. cheers Ron

Looks parabolic it should flex right down to the cork, should give you good stress distribution. Cheers Ron
