Hey all, if any of you are on the other Manitoba forums you might recognize my user name. For those that don't recognize me, I'm from the parkland area of Saskatchewan. I fished a lot in my youth, didn't really amass much knowledge besides how to cast a Len Thompson for pike or use a bobber and j hook for perch and walleye. Didn't touch a rod for probably 8 years or so after I was done high school, but working in the oilfield left me with little time for recreation. Got back into fishing 4 years ago after taking a more hobby friendly job, purchased a brand new boat the following year and have been slowly trying to scratch all the uncaught species off my list. Obviously considering my fishing background catching trout was one of the first things to scratch off my list. It was slow going but after learning how to long troll flies I've really become hooked on catching trout. I'd never witnessed anybody fly fishing up until last fall when an angler was out at Twin Lake while I was there, it really looked like something I wanted to try so I picked up a 5WT and 8WT from cabelas and here I am. I've yet to catch anything. Aside from practicing on the grass a bit, I've only tried casting a bit from the launch at Persse this past weekend. Pretty uneventful and I've still got a long ways to go. Despite being from Saskatchewan I do the majority of my fishing in Manitoba. If I were to venture a guess my first fish on the fly will probably be a smallmouth somewhere in Nopiming at the end of the month when I head out that way to visit my brother and fish for a few weeks.
Looking forward to interacting and learning a bit.

You live in the right area and if you keep at it, it won't be long before that first fly rod fish comes. After that you'll really be hooked!

Didn't think it was new thread worthy..... Weather the last couple weeks hampered my fishing a lot and the hardest hit was the amount of time I had to try the fly rod. Finally felt like yesterday was a prime opportunity while pitching to shore for bass. First cast and I had fish on. Half way to the boat it broke my line . I tried for another hour with no success, but it was frustrating working to keep the boat parallel to shore with the ipilot, having my brother casting as well plus a 3 year old with ants in his pants wandering around the boat. Maybe next time....

had those problems before when i first started then tryed about a 2 or three foot chunk of TRILENE 8LB as the end tippet section.. I never looked back since and i landed some heavy weight fish,, I use only a 7 or 8ft foot leader most times first section 17- 20 lb mono stuff with out memory then a chunk of 8lbs mono straight stuff no more break offs.
or a straight chunk of 12lbs seven foot long fer the bigger trout bigger stuff
17lbs-20lbs chunk of mono for pike with cable wire leader 8-12 inch section....
