Went down to the little river just south of my place expecting to catch some crappie and rock bass but low and behold I managed to hook into a Smallmouth? Yep 10 minutes from my door, don't ask me why it was there but dag nab it it was. Total shock. Harry was down there as well and on a 2 weight he landed a 30 inch Cat. What a fishery.

Wait. A 30" cat on a 2 weight. That must of been of fun fight. Love the shock of realizing what you hook, reminds me of catching a crappie in the spillway last year. Wonder how many other bass are around there or other unsuspected subjects.

The rod is a Redington CT and yeah, I love it. I read about an interesting study in which they timed hook to net times for various wts of fly rods. Contrary to expectations, they found lower times for the lighter rods, down to 00 wt IIRC. They theorized the folks with lighter rods were concerned about mortality while those with heavier tackle enjoyed the fight more.
Many ultralight anglers suggest an UL rod can deal with the same sized fish as a mid weight rod but handle lighter tippets better. Within reason, say up to a 5 wt, I now agree.

It must be a good fly rod if you are eating it.......and I feel guilty about eating smokies over a fishing trip. I cant imagine the guilt driving back home knowing I ate a fly rod.
