Would posting about Ontario fishing get me kicked off this board?

I won't tell anybody. I'm curious about the country north of Superior. I've never fished there.

Nope as long as it is fly fishing...heck I have posted my East Coast Vacation reports here. We love to hear about fly fishing by our members! I'll be posting my Rocky Mountain reports here late summer so have at it. Maybe put them in the general section as we have no need to protect spots in Florida or Ontario or PEI

Sorry, realize I didn't get back to this post. We fished the north superior rivers in early June. Some action there, and scouted quite a few good spots since the last time I was there. There are many great spots to fish right from the highway, or short hike down rivers from Thunderbay east to Wawa. Seasons and species change dramatically depending on the river, some have a variety of trout, some steelhead early in the season and late, some seem full of suckers? Anyway, I've done this trip a few times, and have learned some of the good spots and areas to sty nearby. I would be willing to share with like minded fly fishers if they are looking for a trip to chase steelhead, pinks, atlantics, brooks or rainbows out there. PM me if you want to yak about it, I would be open to accumulating a trip out there as I try to make it at least once a year. The species worth pursuing, being so close, it is tough to ignore. Late fall steelhead?? Pinks are likely gone now.

Went there years ago for spring steelhead when I had a contact with a local fisherman/guide. He called me in the evening and I was there by morning. The fishing was spectacular. Each year I swear I'll go back but never have. For anyone considering it...DO IT!

Pinks are late summer/early fall. I was there mid sept a couple years back and was getting the last of it. There were lively fish near the mouths of rivers, but upstream lots of dead or completely not interested ones. Start of sept seems like a good bet of the pink run, but likely changes quite a bit from year to year and locations that it would be darn near impossible to pin point an ideal time from Manitoba. I have yet to venture out there in the steelhead runs, mainly because it is cold and miserable then. A couple bits of info I have found online may be of some help to any others looking to do so: www.gordellis.com/trout/content/trout-articles/article/northwestern-superiors-best-bets-for-bowsmybackyard.ca/fishing/steelhead-rainbow-trout/At the bottom of the page on the second link is a great map that I wish I had found years back. Possibly that saves somebody some time trying to map out and scope out rivers on their own like I have. This June we were at the Red Rock marina, and folks were catching lake trout from the shore. This is just at the mouth of the Nipigon river too, so many opportunities there.

The spring that I went the weather was beautiful. The secret was to have a local expert monitor the creeks and let you know when the run starts. They usually stack up at creek mouths and wait for a freshet to start the run.

Very true from my experience. Knowing when the runs are happening and what they are hitting is local knowledge, refined by the day. It would be great for us folks hours away to get a few good lines on local conditions or guides that are willing to notify like you had on when the right time is to head out there. Steelhead soon??

Reply to an old topic, and this may sound goofy, but what I have learned from watching and trying this timing many times is closest related to something natural here. When the poplars are budding out in the spring, likely the steelhead are running out in NW ont. when the poplars are dropping their leaves here, time to get your stuff packed and head out to those north superior rivers for the fall run. If you don't quite hit the timing in the fall, there is likely still pinks. The weather along the north shore of superior is a couple weeks colder on each end than winnipeg. I'd catch a ride if anyone in inclined...

Thanks for the update post. This fell off my radar.
Any tips for getting into the Atlantic salmon in that area?

I don't know much about the atlantics, other than some info from fly shops in Sault St Marie and a couple episodes of the new fly fisher on the St Marys river. Sure would like to get there sometime to give it a go, but getting that far is quite the trek.

These folks posted some info on the species and timing for St Mary's river if that helps: www.soonorthflyshop.com/seasons-of-the-st-marysQuite the list, every time I read that I consider just moving there! Coho, Chinook, Steelhead, Atlantics, come on...this has to be a joke. I've caught pinks down there, that's about it.
