So I was lucky on the draws and won this rod at the MFFA banquet. Ever since then I've been looking forward to getting out and giving it a shot!
It'a 10ft 7wt 3 piece rod. Overall, a great class of rod for Manitoba Trout, Bass, and smaller Pike.
The spring weather may have been lousy or I would have probably had it out trout fishing by now, but that hasn't happened so I headed out to give the Red a shot on Sunday and gave the rod a try. I picked a spot that wasn't likely to get me a big cat. It wouldn't do to break it on the first time out after all!
Anyway, the rod is as light as advertised, and casts very easily. I was using an 8 wt versatip line and this matched up quite nicely to the rod. It loaded easily and I could get a good cast and shoot some line effortlessly. Perhaps because of the slightly heavier line, or by design, I think the action was a little slower than many of the rods on the market today. This is a positive thing in my opinion. The super-fast rods never seem to have as nice of a feel to me. One feature I noticed right away was the length of the fighting butt. It's about 2.5", noticebly longer than most. I think this will be helpful at times.
My first fish of the year was a nice little carp, maybe 22 or 23 inches. Unfortunately, foul hooked, but still a good test of the rod. One thing I noticed was that it had a very deep flex, bending right down through the rod. It gave a good feel of the fish, and lots of control. It had lots of backbone for a fish this size, no trouble handling it.

Stu told me he had a hand in the design of this rod, I think he would be proud. I think this is a great all round rod and it would really suit tubing for MB trout, especially with the extra length to give you some extra clearance in a float tube.
Now I've got to get the reel spooled up and give that a try too!
