what in heck are you going to fish for with that? my thoughts exactly. Maybe it's just my mediocre casting ability, but I can't imagine throwing anything into the slightest breeze with it - or handling anything larger than my handspan. Freshly planted trout, perhaps?

yup. Reynolds ponds Brookies mainly. Also the Brokenhead river has a great population of rockbass and other downsized fish like small Shorthead Redhorses which are awesome on the fly a lot like small carp in my opinion. The casting however thats the challenge considering the lightest rod I used before is a 4wt. and th switch from this rod to my 9 wt cat rod is going to be tough but, wind shouldn't be a problem I am probably casting a max of 25'-30' with it.

What part of the Brokenhead are talking about?

Great Woods park down to road 44 E or St Ouens. basically all of this is private property except for the highway 44 bridge and service road. so you can launch a inflatable boat and travel up or down the river or in the late season you can wade I think that entire section.

That's very interesting - I was raised in the area (Beausejour) but have never caught anything but the odd pike in those waters. Are you fishing dries for the rock bass? Might have to give it a go some time down by the St. Ouens bridge or the old rail bridge upstream. IIRC it's wadeable down there.
Come to think of it, we did used to dip net suckers in there in the spring at the g*lf course or Kenbro Park dam

The St Ouens bridge is great for Rock bass, especially in June to August. I rarely use dries or sub surface flies for Rock bass due to the many pike in there they all compete for food in a small area so the pike will eat basically anything. so I will use small versions of carp flies like size 10-12 backstabbers (with some good weight gets below the pike). any colour works but Red and yellow is deadly in that river.

Looks like fun! Looks like plenty of rod for the sunfish you find in Minnewasta…

I've fished a couple of spot on the Brokenhead in that area. Some really good looking water to do some wading and toss a fly. Nice flowing fairly clear water with some riffles and pools, and some ideal holding structure. Only thing missing was fish

That's the problem with this river, very misleading. Looks great for trout but the only thing you'll catch on nymphs and dries is shiners, creek chub and some rock bass. However according to the Manitoba trout fishing guide it lists the Brokenhead to have Brook trout it's just labeled by richer were the river runs with very little water.

They haven't stocked that section in years with trout but I think they have dropped walters in there.
Wading for rockies would be ok with me but I suspect that, typical of local streams, there would be a narrow window between high/brown/dangerous and low/clear/safe where it would be wadeable with a chance of fish.

Would there be any place upstream or downstream that has a higher percentage of fish? Or is the river just low in population in general

The river has a high general population of fish, kind of shocking how fertile it is. However, the upper Brokenhead has higher water so more fish. The closer you get to lake Winnipeg the wider and deeper it generally will be.
