Hapy new year everyone!
My Dad gave me this rod while I was visiting for christmas.
It's in pretty good shape, but the ferrules should be reglued, and he suggested rewrapping the guides and redoing the varnish too... might make you think it wasn't in such great shape, but really it doesn't look so bad.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone here has experience with the varnish and which is the correct glue?

Looks like a nice piece of cane.
A few ways you could go with this - a simple 'make it work for now' approach, and just glue on the ferrules and have a go (won't preserve the rod, so I wouldn't be keen on this), or, what the heck - if it need a bit of work, do it all. Keep a cool old cane rod alive - Rewrap, reglue ferrules, and refinish. If you want, depending on how much 'original rod' you want to preserve, you could even remove the reel seat and grip and put new ones on (not sure I would. That grip and reel seat look pretty decent to me).
Spar varnish is a pretty good easily-available finish (canadian tire etc), and my glue of choice for ferrules would be 5 min epoxy. Have alcohol available to wipe up excess epoxy. For re-wrapping, you can get rodbuilding thread (don't use sewing machine thread) from any number of rodbuilding suppliers online.
But before you jump into it, I'd suggest a visit (and join, even) the rod building forum (www.rodbuildingforum.com) where you can learn all you ever wanted to know about rod repair and building. great site, a few of us are members there. They also have a great thread listing all the popular suppliers.
Good luck, and maybe see you on Rodbuildingforum!
